How to add 2nd harddisk to Dell 4700

I have a Samsung HD160JJ disk 160 GB (3.0 Gb/s) i.e. SATA2, that I wanted to add as a 2nd harddisk to my Dell 4700 desktop pc.  Can the Dell 4700 work with a SATA2 disk ?

Can someone advise me ?

Yes the SATA 2 drive will be backward compatible. It will work just not at SATA 2 specs.

I would just install the drive and not worry about setting anything really. The bios will handle the rest. The SATA spec is just the interface, not really the drive. All it means is that the drive is capable of running at the 3gigs speed. So it will only run as fast as the interface can handle it

Thanks for the prompt response.  I presume I need not set it to 1.5 Gb/s manually and the bios will take care of it automatically and make it a SATA1 disk specs.

I have added my Samsung HD160JJ/P drive into Dell 4700 as a second drive (SATA-2), connect the data and power cable as per manual.  The bios setting for SATA-2 has been set to ON but the bios still cannot recognize the 2nd drive i.e. Drive ID = Unknown.  I have even set the jump setting as per Samsung manual but still cannot recognize.

Can someone advise me what is wrong ?  The system still can be boot up.

How about windows does windows recognize the drive?

Try swapping cables with the working drive, try another SATA port. You may need to run the mfr setup disk to setup the drive.
