How to istall Windows 7 from reinstallation DVD on a new HDD after HDD crash.

Jump to solution

I have an nearly two year old Studio XPS 7100, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, AMD Phenom II X6 1055T.

After my original WD1001FAES 1 TB disk crashed due to bad sectors (error codes: 1344, 075D, 065D, 0244 and 1A44), I bought a new WD1002FAEX 1 TB from a local Swedish dealer today.

I have attached the new drive in place of the old, but have not continued further yet. My computer came with a Reinstallation DVD and a Drivers and Utility disk. I also have two system recovery DVDs that a created  in March 2011 right after the computer was delivered.

How do I proceed?

Best regards,

Kerstin

Hi Lab-Kerstin,

I've got a link below to Natakuc's clean install guide, which provides all the detail you need to reinstall Windows.

I might add that no change in the hardware, except for the HDD, have been made.

The general idea is to execute a clean Windows 7 install from the Reinstallation DVD and then install the drivers from the Drivers and Utilities disk.

What is a clean install? Do I need to format the disk first? It's never been used. Change booting order?

Sorry about my somewhat stupid questions :-)

A clean install is brand new, and not an upgrade of an existing install.

Windows will create and format a partition if one is not present. You shouldn't need to change the boot order.

Hello again,

Ok, my new harrdive is up and running Windows 7 as before :-) In the end it was easier for me to use the recovery DVDs I created myself when my computer was about one week old.

I have a "new" problem though :-(

Still, there are a few GB of data on the old disk that I would like to recover. I tried to attach it as a secondary disk in my system. Bought a new SATA cable and used the free end of the power cable, the P4. The P3 is attached to the new HDD with the OS.

I have checked the booting order, so that should be fine I think. Still, the computer freezes during startup, as it did when only the old disk was there. If I take away the old disk, It works normally again. How can I get around this problem?

Hi Lab-Kerstin,

I think your old drive is dead.
