Inspiron 570 compatible graphics card

Hi Gerry, You can get the 4650 HERE into your system, your PSU will handle that card, or you can go for the 4550 HERE.

The 4650 recommends >350W power supply.  The 570 has a 300W power supply.  Isn't that going to be a problem?  From the specs, looks like the 4350 & 4550 are potential options and maybe the 5450 (new 570's have the 5450 as an available option but not sure if they use the same 300w power supply or if they upgrade the power supply).  Doesn't look like many options without upgrading the power supply.

Hi, Dell PSU's are under rated, and graphics cards are over rated when it comes to power. Your 300w PSU will run the ATI HD 4650 with no problems.

I use a 4670 in my system and its power supply is 300W and it works just fine.

Couple follow up questions for the group:

1) does the 570 require a "low profile" version graphics card?

2) from the research I have done, it appears the HD 4650 & HD 4670 appear to be the best cards for the money for this computer and from the discussions here, the 300W supply seems like it can handle it with no issues.  So, is it worth an extra $5-15 to get a 4670 versus a 4650?

3) does anyone know what the power draw difference is between a HD 4650 and HD 4670?

As others have pointed out, you can take PSUs with a big grain of salt.  I'm running a 4850 on my Inspiron 546 MT without issue.  I did have to buy converters to get from SATA power to Molex, pull 2 molex from different PSU rails, and plug them into the 2x Molex to 6-pin adapter that came with my graphics card.

Worst case, I don't think running on an inadequate power supply can cause any worse issues than crashes or (more likely) visual artifacts.  If you try it and its not working well, you can upgrade the PSU then.

Does the 4650 or 4670 require any adaptors or modifications to work in the 570?  Also, still curious if the 570 needs a "low profile" card or if a regular one will work.

From what I've researched neither of these cards require a power adapter and you only need a low profile card if you have the slim version of the 570.

I have a 570 and don't think the 570 comes in a 570s slim version like the 560 & 580.  Thus, for the regular 570, is a low profile card still necessary?

No.  A low profile card is not necessary.  The 4650 and 4670 do not require any additional power connections as neither needs more than the 75 watts provided by the pcie X16 slot.  

I use a Nvidia GT 240 in my Dell 546 that has a 300w power supply ... its about the same video quality are an ATI 4670

The power connectors are no problem you simply use a SATA converting connector.  The problem I am having is my inability to disable the on-board graphics, either through the BIOS or in Device Manager.  If anyone knows how to do this it would really help.  Please.

Are you saying that when you added a PCIe x16 video card, the integrated video was not automatically disabled?
