Inspiron 580 CPU upgrade

Hello everyone, I know that this question has been asked however the information is currently outdated.

The motherboard is a socket 1156, came with Core i3's and i5's stock, and many stated that the i7 was not supported because it wasn't in that socket factor at the time.

Well back then 2 years ago it wasn't available in this socket at the time when people were answering the question. Anyways long story short, I see that there are a few i7s in socket 1156 and was wondering if anyone has ever had done the upgrade to an i7 and how it went.

I was looking at a i7 870 socket 1156, any word anyone?

Thanks again!

It's not just the socket, it's because the Dell Inspiron 580 OEM Intel H57 chipset only supports the i3 and i5 processors and not the i7, for this you need a different motherboard.

I just want to confirm for anybody that has this older PC like I do that you can indeed stick an i7-870 in the motherboard and it will work fine. Just because Dell did not "support" the i7 in this motherboard, does not mean the chipset and Windows will not recognize it. My BIOS, which is revision A07 from 2010, recognizes the CPU as an i7-870 with hyperthreading. I feel like many of the other threads I read on this topic were misleading by so called experts who said it would not work, so I tried it myself and it works just fine.

The retail specs for the H57 chipset list support for i7 processors ... just curious where you found information on Dell/OEM specs for it.

that's good to know that certain i7 CPUs work on the Dell Inspiron 580 machine, benz598.

however, there's a slightly faster CPU than the i7-870, and that would be i7-880 (though that one is rare).  also the i7s like 870 and 880 are of "Lynnfield" generation - right around the same time the Intel "Clarkdale" i3s & i5s came out for the Dell Inspiron 580 computer.

I am concerned  about the bios,  of course windows will recognize  it.  I would want to try xeon x3470 on my dell inspiron to replace the i5 650
