Inspiron 580 desktop, adding usb hub

Just acquired an Inspiron 580 desktop with only 6 usb connectors--4 in back,  2 in front.  I've already used all those in back--keyboard, mouse, speakers, and external hard drive. I need at least two more on back for printer and scanner. I purchased a usb hub without power adapter--usb powered. I may have bought the wrong kind--the keyboard and mouse did not work when connected to the hub.  Please advise as to how to add more usb connectors. If adding a hub, what kind?  Thank you in advance for any expertise you can share.

Re: Inspiron 580 desktop, adding usb hub

The keyboard and mouse must be connected directly to the USB ports on the rear and NOT through a USB hub.  Second, ONLY use "Powered" USB hubs (ones that have their own power supply) so you have enough power for whatever devices are connected.  In many cases using the PC's USB power is not enough for hub connected devices.
