Inspiron BSOD bugcheck 124 whea uncorrectable error

Just bought an Inspiron I3650-1551SLV from Best Buy last week. I keep getting BSOD every day around the same hour.

The last time the BSOD had code WHE UNCORRECTABLE ERROR. Not sure about the other times as I just set it to not restart on BSOD.

The event log has an !ERROR! around the at the time of the BSOD Bugcheck 124. Same error time looking bat at the event logs.

I installed all the Windows updates on first boot, so I have no idea if an update is causing a problem.

I went into the device manager it didn't show any errors. A went down the list and one by one check for new drivers. It found and installed a few new drivers, about 5-8 I lost count. The Dell Support Assistant app that came installed always thinks the same 2 drivers are out of date even though I told it to install them multiple times (Chipset & Network). Support Assistant also found a Bios update but that installed fine.

I ran checkdisk C: without any /flags and it did not find any errors.

I tried to open C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP with notepad put it seems to be binary data.

If I cant fix this I will take it back to Best Buy while I can. Well I bought 2 identical machines, but only the one I use is getting BSOD, well I haven't gotten any complaints about the other machine and I don't see any bugcheck 124 errors on the event manager. Might end up taking both of them back, I don't know.

You may have to take this one back to BB. :emotion-6:

According to Microsoft:

The WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR bug check has a value of 0x00000124. This bug check indicates that a fatal hardware error has occurred. This bug check uses the error data that is provided by the Windows Hardware Error Architecture (WHEA).

Thanks. I took it back to Best Buy for an exchange.

The Geek Squad guy just booted it up and claimed there is nothing wrong with it. Then I told him about the error code and said he was just going to reset it and box it up.

Hopefully the replacement will not show the same error, otherwise it is going back, too.

Glad they took care of it.  Hope you won't be that unlucky to get another WHEA error!

Don't forget when you buy a Dell PC from a Big Box store that you have to register the Service Tag in your name to get full warranty coverage.

Good luck and come back if you have any other questions...

Unlucky. I went for an exchange. 5 days later I got another WHEA error bugcheck 124 on the replacement.

Let me ping my Dell tech contacts.

Stay tuned...

Here's what my tech contacts suggested:

Reboot and IMMEDIATELY press F12. Look for the option to run Diagnostics and run all of them. Copy  error codes received, if any, and post here.

If you're getting WHEA errors at around the same time each day, disconnect the network cable from rear of PC before that time comes and continue to use it. Let us know if that stops the WHEA errors or if they continue even when not connected to the internet.

(BTW: Ignore Support Assist if it keeps telling you to install drivers you already installed.)

And my suggestion:

Go to the Intel download site and let their wizard scan your hardware for newer drivers for chipsets, Intel Graphics etc. Install them and reboot.

Then, if you have add-in video card (eg, AMD or NVidia) go to their website and look for updated driver for your specific add-in video card and version of Windows.

I ran all the diagnostics under F12 reboot, on both systems. I did not receive any errors.

Are you still getting WHEA errors? Are they at same time of day?

Did you update Intel and video card drivers from Intel site and either AMD or NVidia site, depending on what video card you have?

I  had  only 1 WHEA error so far on the 2nd computer. Both computer had the WHEA errors around the same time, around 3-4. I did run the F12 boot tests on both computers. No computer showed an error.

I checked for new drivers with Intel. The Intel Driver Update Utility only found the graphics driver. It says that the graphics driver is a customized manufacturer driver, so it is not able to update it. The Utility wants me to uninstall the customized driver if I want to update to a generic driver, but it doesn't recommend using a generic driver because it may cause technical issues.

I have an Intel graphics card. HD Graphics 350.

No add-in video card from AMD or NVidia?

If you can, disconnect one of them from the internet before the time of the WHEA error and see if it happens anyway.

I'll ping my Dell tech contact again for any other recommendations...
