Memory Upgrade for a Dell 4700 [Amin Note: Service Tag Edited per TOU policy] Compatible PC2-3200 memory options
Hello there.
Hopefully I am posting this to the correct spot. I have an old Dell 4700 [Amin Note: Service Tag Edited per TOU policy] and I've recently started restoring it for casual use. It has Windows 7 Ultimate on it and the original pair of 256MB 1Rx16 PC2-3200U-333-10-C1 memory sticks it came with. I'd like to upgrade to the largest compatible memory available for this model. Can someone (with definitive tones in their voice) explain which memory to buy and fill all 4 slots with? This always seems to spawn a debate on what speed the PC is and which can and can't be run in this machine.
This will mainly be used by my girlfriend and 2 teens for internet surfing and retro games like Fallout 1 & 2, Dungeon Keeper II and Master Of Orion 2. Nothing really graphic intensive. It's the processing of movies as a media server, the ability to move files in large numbers while handling downloads, and sending out files and folders to tablets and phones while posting to social networking that will be bogging it down. So I need the highest and fastest memory possible for this old dinosaur. Thank you in advance for any and all help! ~ Jim

Go HERE to find the DDR2 memory that is guaranteed to be compatible with your system.
The maximum RAM supported by the Dimension 4700 is 4GB of DDR2 memory [4 x 1gb modules].
Note: While you can install 4gb of memory in the Dimension 4700, unless you have a 64bit system, your system will only address 3gb+- of memory.

I'm assuming that they have to be paired. So if I'm using a x32 system and only get to use 3GB of the full 4GB installed, I could technically run 2X1GB and 2X516MB DDR2 and get the same 3GB total in practical use?

Yes, for maximum performance DDR2 memory should be installed in matched pairs.
Yes, on the second paragraph, this applies if you have a 32-bit system.
