Memory configuration help for Optiplex 760
Hi,
I was just given a used, but very clean Optiplex 760 desktop as a gift, as a replacement for my old tech P-4 AGP system.
Service code [Amin Note: Service Tag Edited per TOU policy]
It currently has 2x2Gb PC2-6400 modules in slots 1 & 3. I have a few spare 1Gb PC2-6400 modules lying around, and I was wondering if I can install 2x1Gb in slots 2 & 4, for a total of 6Gb installed.
As an aside, I understand that this board will only address 8Gb, but I'm confused on what physical configurations are supported. For instance, will 2x4Gb in slots 1 & 3 work as well?
Thanks for any info anyone can share with me.

You posted memory configuration seems to be incorrect.
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_optiplex_desktop/optiplex-760_Service%20Manual_en-us.pdf
You can install 2 x 2gb modules in slots [white] 1 & 2 and 2 x 1gb modules in slots [black] 3 & 4, for a total of 6gb of RAM.
Remember that the memory must be compatible with the OptiPlex 760.
The Memory DIMM's [slots] are colour coded black and white to avoid confusion.

Hi Anafiel,
Dell has tested the slots with only 4x2GB on this model. Dell OptiPlex 760 supports maximum of 8GB memory. We may not be able to guarantee 2x4GB combination.

The OptiPlex 760 [Desktop, Mini Tower and Small Form Factor versions] support 8gb of RAM, this needs to be installed in matching pairs for maximum performance, 2 x 1gb, or 2 x 2gb modules. 4gb modules are not supported.

Ok on the 4Gb modules, but I'm still wondering if I can add 2x1Gb modules in slots 2 and 4, for a total of 6Gb. Remember, I have 2x2Gb modules already installed in slots 1 & 3. I'm wondering if the mboard supports 6Gb in that configuration.
Thanks

Haha! Yes, you are correct, but so am I. I count the slots in their physical order, starting from the one closest to the processor.
So I indeed have my 2Gb modules installed in slots 1&2 as you and the service manual indicate, but they are in physical slots 1&3 as counted from the processor moving outward.
And you have answered my original question as well, so thank you very much!
