Memory upgrade Vostro 200

I have upgraded memory from 2 to 4 GB, but the computer is only showing 3.24 GB on the control panel system info. When I opened the case there was original 667 MHz in slots 1 and 3. I tried with the new in 2 and 4 (new is 800MHz), that  only showed as 3.24 GB. I redid with old in 1 and 2 and new in 3 and 4. Still only 3.24, but a slightly better frequency.

If I go to "Info about your computer" through "Help and Support Centre" from Start Menu, it shows the RAM as 4096, which is a relief. Why doesn't system info on control panel show the same though, is it just a "running" figure?

When you have a 32bit system, this does not recognize 4gb of memory, 3gb± is all a 32bit system can address.

Basically what it means is, while you can install 4gb of memory in the system, the reason it’s not recognized is mainly due to 32-bit processors & 32-bit applications on memory address limitations.

64-bit processors & operating systems will recognize beyond the 32-bit limitation.
