Memory upgrade resulting in lockup at boot time
I have two Dell Dimension Desktops. One is a 2400 and the other is a 4500. Both have two 256MB DDR sticks and needed to be upgraded. I read the forums and noted that there was some trouble with 1GB stick upgrades so I opted for two 512MB PC2700 DDR SDRAM 333 sticks.
I have installed this memory in both of my Dimension desktops with the same result - they lock up at boot time. I belive the PC recognizes the memory as installed because it did beep at me initially when the sticks were not fully seated at boot time. After fixing the memory stick seating and booting, it does detect the DVD drives and hard drive but never gets to the point where a signal is sent to the monitor. How do I know if I have good memory or I am missing some configuration step in this process?

Hello,
It sounds as if you bought memory that is bad, or not specified for your system model.
To see if the memory is bad, try only one chip at a time. Remove the first and try the next ...
Dell computers are very picky with memory upgrades. You can read why and how at the memory pages on my web site linked below if you like. No name, Value ram, and even quality memory will not work if the complete specs required by Dell are not met.
