Missing RAM = losing a long time customer...
I purchase a Inspiron 531 back on Dec 3, 2007. No issues to speak of until now.
Last weekend I was thinking of improving the RAM and opened up the tower. Inside were 4 slots, only 3 were filled. A 1 GB and two 512s had been installed. In my books that adds up to 2 GB of RAM. My invoice states that it was built with 3GB of RAM!
Now I'm no computer wizard, so I don't know how visual a difference there is between 2 GB and 3GB. I contacted Dell and over two days was past back and forth between Tech and Cust. Service, each claiming that it was not their responsibilty. Their records show it was built with 3 GB, which I've discovered is not the case. I was told that I should have complained within 30 days. Funny, no where in their set up instructions does it state that you should open up the tower and confirm that it was built properly! How was I to know I was missing RAM without having opened the tower.
So end result...after having purchased 4-5 Dell computers over the last 10 years....I will never buy another one and will bad mouth them at every opportunity I get. That may surprise all the people that I have recommended Dell to. All this over them refusing to send me 1 GB of RAM worth less than $40 retail...RAM that should have been in my computer to start with!

Did you confirm that 2 or 3 GB of ram shows up in the 'System Properties' box? That's the easiest way to determine whether the right amount of RAM is installed.

I think it's a little late to complain about something you should of verified when you received the PC by looking at the system properties. Besides how are you going to prove you didn't take 1GB stick out? It's a bummer, but Dell gives you 21 days to check out the computer and return it if it doesn't meet your expectations.

As stated above, I opened up the tower and looked at the actual slots..1 slot had a 1 GB stick and two slots had 512 sticks, that adds up to 2 GB...right?
There was one empty slot. According to the Dell Tech Rep, there should have been 2 slots with 1 GB sticks each and 2 slots with 512 sticks each. There should have been NO empty slots according to the build sheet.

I don't argue that it is a little late, but I'm also very disappointed that they are willing to lose a customer of 10 years. As a loyal customer, that never made one claim, not one service phone call, I would think out of principal they would have come through on this.
You say the onus is on me to check the system properties, maybe, but in all these years I've never had a problem. Maybe they should have tighter quality assurance controls.
Regardless I will go out and buy the upgrade and they will lose a customer over something that probaly costs them a couple of dollars. They have lost far more than I have in this unfortunate situation. Having been a Manager in a Customer Service department, I would have handled this much differently....
