My Dell XPS 8500 momentarily turns on and off every time I turn on my AC power/UPS. Is this normal?
I have an XPS 8500. The power is connected to my UPS. Whenever I turn on my UPS, the PC will momentarily turn on and back off by itself (for about a few milliseconds. Is this normal?
Also, I am not able to manually turn off the PC by pressing the power button, either pressing it once, or even pressing and holding the power button for more than 10 seconds. Such as every time I go to BIOS to modify or not, I cannot turn the PC off there. I have to reboot the PC first and have it boot directly to windows first and then shutdown the PC from there.
What if I don't have windows installed yet? I have no choice here except to directly power the PC's PSU by removing it from AC source.
Other than these issues, the PC runs normally.
Thanks for your help in advance.

This is perfectly normal. The PC has an "AC Recovery" option in BIOS setup that tells the PC what to do when it recovers from a power failure. Turning the UPS off is the same as a power failure. So when you turn the UPS on, the PC turns on briefly to check the AC Recovery setting in BIOS. If that option is set to "do nothing", the PC powers off again.
If you're lazy like me, you can set the AC Recovery option to "reboot" when recovering from a power failure. So as soon as you turn the UPS on, the PC will boot without having to press the power button.
It's always better to let the PC boot to the desktop and then shut down normally through Windows, than to force a shutdown which has the potential to damage the HDD and/or corrupt files on the drive.

This 12-year old Dell Dimension 8400 desktop does exactly the same thing and has never had any problems (knock wood!). So that's why I set AC Recovery to reboot automatically when I turn the surge protector on.
My monitor, speakers, etc. are all connected to the same surge so everything powers on with the press of a single button.
Non-Dell PCs may be set up differently so they don't start fans and drives briefly while BIOS is being checked... dunno....

Thank you. But almost all PC nowadays has an AC Recovery Option in their BIOS. But of all the PCs that I have assembled, only the XPS 8500 have this issue (momentary turning on and off). In the BIOS option, if you selected in the AC Recovery Option to "Remain OFF" during power failure, all other PCs that I have assembled really does remain OFF. Even if I turn my UPS on and off many times, the PCs will still remain off. Unlike here in XPS 8500. This is why I asked it here because it is really the first time for me to experience this issue, only here in XPS 8500. It's somewhat "uncommon."
Anyway, if this is really normal, then it's fine by me. By asking it here have at least answered some of my concerns. And besides, the PC still functions normally other than this issue.
Thanks for your help.
Regards.
