My inspirion580 (dell 033FF6) won't boot with just bought ram!

Hi!

I bought a new 4gb Kingston ram today and my computer won't work at all.

The rams I had before ( I still have them) were 4 x 1gb and if I try to start the computer with the new ram + 3x1gb ( the old rams) it stays in the first "inspirion" loading screen, where I should be able to press either F2 or F12 but can't. It just freezes there.

I've also tried to start the computer only with the new ram in different slots, but it doesn't help much. It gets through the first loading screen, but when it starts to load Windows, it stops and gives me Blue Screen Of Death! It has given me 4 different errors and every time I try to boot again, it won't get past the Windows loading screen.

This is the new ram:  http://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KVR13N9S8_4.pdf

And this is the old rams: DELL Kingston 1Gb PC3-10600 1333Mhz DDR3 Desktop Memory RAM , KTW149-ELD.

To my eyes those two have the same "basic" stats, so it should work with my motherboard.

Help needed!

Supported RAM configurations: 4 GB, 6 GB, and 8 GB.

By my math you have 7 GB which isn't supported. And RAM works best if used in matched pairs.

And of course, you need a 64-bit version of Windows to recognize and use more than 4GB of RAM.

Thanks for the reply!

I have the 64-bit windows.

I don't know, if I should go and get another new ram, so I would have 2 of the same 4GB rams..

Bios recognized the new ram, so I don't think it's a bad ram.

If the new RAM works as long as you have one of the supported configurations, you have several choices, in random order:

  1. Return new RAM and stay where you are at 4 GB
  2. Return new RAM, buy 2x2 GB and keep 2x1 GB old for total of 6 GB
  3. Buy another (matched) 4 GB, and remove all old RAM for total of 8 GB

Only you can decide what to do. Be sure to include any "restocking" and shipping costs to return the new 4 GB in your calculation if you do #1 or #2.

You might also consider selling old RAM that's removed on eBay, Craigslist etc, if you go with #2 or #3, which should be factored into your cost analysis.

Thanks for the answer! I think I go for 2 new RAMs and if they don't work, I just return them and buy a new motherboard.

buy a new motherboard.

Hang on...

If you buy a new motherboard, unless it's an exact Dell replacement, it's not going to work in this case. Dell uses custom connectors between the motherboard and front panel, so you won't be able to swap in a Dell board from some other Dell model or a non-Dell motherboard.

And if you buy a non-Dell motherboard (and case to go with it), you're also going to have to buy a new license for Windows. The Dell Windows Installation disk won't allow you to install Windows with a non-Dell motherboard. You will have to reinstall Windows because the hardware on the new motherboard will be different from the original so it won't boot from the hard drive unless/until you reinstall Windows.

Post back and let us know if it works once you install a supported RAM configuration.
