Re: NEW.. Any and all concerns about the new XPS 435/8000/9000

I have been following this noise ussue thread a little so I hooked up a headset to the front of my 435T to see if I also have that probelm. I don't have a audio card other than the integrated one on the board. I too have that problem. I can plug my headset in the back and it is totally clear. I have a 4 year old Compaq computer I use for backup and tried the front audio jacks on that and it has the same problem. So it appears that this may be a problem with more than just Dell computers. Will be interesting to see how this comes out.

Re: NEW.. Any and all concerns about the new XPS 435/8000/9000

Well it is sad to see this audio jack problem being talking about for the XPS9000.

I just ordered one. I have a lot of posts here because in 2003 i purchased a XPS Gen 2 PC and it also had this problem. I posted many times complaining about it. So it is not going away. Back then there were at least 6 posted that had thousands of replys about this problem. After 3 + years i gave up. I was never going to purchase another DELL. I then got a Dell  DJ Gen 1. They dropped support for it after one year.

The Sound Blaster card has become a bigger problem, as they have been having static issues with this card for years now, and not just to headphone jack. That is why i got just the onboard sound as the SB cards have knowen issues. Just go read the creative forums.

I would not hold my breath waiting or thinking this is going to be fixed as it will not be.

Re: NEW.. Any and all concerns about the new XPS 435/8000/9000

I have an XPS 8000 and although I have not checked my front audio ports in comparison to the rear, I do think I may have an explanation.  My use of computers for forensic audio (voice) analysis literally goes back more than twenty years.  Problems very similar to what you are experiencing were around then too, and have been ever since.  My suspicion is that the cable from the mobo to the front ports has very poor shielding.  Therefore, it is exposed to picking up all sorts of noise.

Most audio pro's I know avoid the use of internal sound cards.  Exceptions are made for sophisticated cards costing nearly as much as a base XPS, if not more.  An inexpensive way to avoid some of these issues is through the use of a USB headset (with microphone if you want it).  Personally, I've never been too impressed with these either.  What works like a charm is an external interface via USB or firewire. An acceptable USB audio interface can be had for less than 100 USD.  Check in the recording section of online musician's stores for a huge selection.  You'll also get the "lite" version of some good software with most.  At the 250.00 price point, you are into the pro domain and will have pristine sound in and out.

Re: NEW.. Any and all concerns about the new XPS 435/8000/9000

I'm still waiting, I usually see the date change on Monday or Tuesday at about 3am EST.

The only other reason I can think of for the delay is the graphic card being out of stock. I went with the GTX260, maybe they are backordered?

Received this email yesterday

Re: NEW.. Any and all concerns about the new XPS 435/8000/9000

For those interested, I managed to successfully install a Corsair TX-650 power supply and an ATI 5770 video-card inside my Studio XPS 8000 (Core i7-860, 8GB RAM, 1TB HD).

Both units seem to be operating fine.  The 5770 has been overclocked to 960 core and 1325 memory on stock cooling.  It managed a 3dMark Vantage score of P10914.

The big fan on the Corsair certainly helps with internal case cooling although all the cables attached to it do take up space and are a challenge to store away inside.  Installation of both the video card and the power supply were easy and straight-forward enough.

Re: NEW.. Any and all concerns about the new XPS 435/8000/9000

I ordered my XPS 9000 on 10/25/09 and received it on 11/18/09 and I thought that was slow considering my previous Dell 8200 and 8300 desktops were received within 7 working days.

Only problems so far:

The Nvidia GT220 driver 8.15.11.8627 blacks out for a moment sometimes.  I've upgraded to the latest 1.9107 driver but that messed up the Window's Live Photo gallery's zoom and pan slideshows (stutters) so I'm back to the original video driver for now.

Two of the top access USB ports don't seem to recognize my external hard drives.  The top headphone jack cuts off intermittently even when securely plugged in.

Start up/shut off time (to conserve energy) has improved noticeably to 85s/6s compared to my old Dell desktops with XP.

So far, so good.

Good luck to folks still waiting on their orders!

Re: NEW.. Any and all concerns about the new XPS 435/8000/9000

Awhile back there was some talk about the 435T/9000 computer and what UPS could be used. There were several saying the UPS had to be a true sine wave UPS which could cost two or three hundred dollars. I still have a very cheap Dynex UPS I bought from BB back in my HP and Windows XP days. I have the 435T, a Samsung 23 inch monitor, a Linksys Modem and wireless router hooked up to the battery side. I just had my first power outage since getting the 435T computer and the UPS  held everything up just fine without a burp. It gave me plenty of time to get everything saved and the computer shut down. The Dynex site says my UPS unit is simulated sine wave which I  paid $79.00 for so the true sine wave thing is not true.  If anyone else has read that article I would unplug your UPS from power and see if it holds before going out and spending the extra money.

Re: NEW.. Any and all concerns about the new XPS 435/8000/9000

Well, in positive news my order was not delayed at 3am again this morning like in weeks past. I can only hope that means they will actually ship my order this week. :fingers crossed: I'm excited because other then the sound jack issue it seems the XPS is relatively problem free.
