NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745/ Dell XPS 8700 Questions
So I just got the Dell XPS 8700 with windows 8.1 64 bit and got it updated and all the latest drivers and was hoping to enjoy some gaming. When I started playing World of Warcraft I noticed I was only getting around 33 FPS when my old xps 9000 with AMD Radeon HD 5770 got 50 - 60 FPS even in well populated areas. I tried everything from turning down the graphic settings in game, adjusting settings on the NVidia control panel as suggested by things found on google and many other things like using vertical sync and 32 bit mode. Nothing has increased my FPS. I know my graphics card isn't that good compared to the others out there since it was built for dell but wow such bad performance. Is there any suggestions to improving this or do I need to replace this graphics card already?
My Computer Specs:
Dell XPS 8700
Windows 8.1 64 bit OS
12 GB Duel Channel DDR3 1600 MHz RAM
Intel Core i7-4790 @ 3.60 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 4GB DDR3
1TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive 6.0 Gb/s
460W PSU

Get a GDDR5 750 TI. The GDDR3 745 is no where near where a GDDR5 5770 is.

A quick search shows the GTX 745 is faster than the 5770. Did you also change monitors?
What monitor and what resolution are you running now and what monitor and resolution were you running before?
If it is higher resolution are you using HDMI? Spec's indicate that Higher resolution over HDMI is at a slower refresh rate.
"3840x2160 at 30Hz or 4096x2160 at 24Hz supported over HDMI. 4096x2160 (including 3840x2160) at 60Hz supported over Displayport."

What is your budget for a new card?
GTX 750ti is a OK upgrade but is still a budget graphics card, and if you have resolution higher than 1080p it may not be enough. Even at 1080p it is still just OK.
There are many upgrade options, and each step is a little more more expensive.

Depends on which benchmark you use.
Passmark says the 5770 is better. GDDR5 Makes a difference vs DDR3.
For the games that struggle you will see little difference. There is a bios issue with the 960,970,980

You might be right but I haven't seen any benchmarks showing the 5770 faster than a desktop version of the GTX 745. If you scroll up higher on the passmark chart you'll find the 745 scores 2160, where the 5770 scores 1686. Were you looking at the 745M (mobile GPU)
@Gamerear15 monitor and what resolution do you have?
1920x1080 its one thing. If it is 2560x1440 then it is a completely different story. If its a 4K monitor even more of a challenge.
I'm done with this discussion until OP responds with monitor resolution.

since it is 1080p it comes down to how much you want to spend.
750ti approx $110
950 approx $150
960 approx $185-190

How easy is it for someone with little experience to swap graphic cards? Im thinking about getting the 750ti since I read on google that if I didn't want to upgrade the PSU I shouldn't go no more than the 750ti for the xps 8700. Also what are the steps to installing the new one like should I uninstall the old one and remove the card then put the new one in and install it. Does the 750ti use the same connector as the 745

The biggest issue changing cards is getting your finger under to release the locking tab. You pull it back slightly too much and it snaps off forever.
There is a Locking Clip on the slot that keeps the card in. The tab is at the back of the slot towards the middle of the motherboard vs the video output side of the card.If your card includes a retention mechanism, remove the top of the retention mechanism by pressing the tab and pulling up on the top. Gently pull the securing tab, grasp the card by its top corners, and then ease it out of its connector.

I'm fairly sure the 8700 comes with 2 X 6 pin connector so as long as the bios is updated to the latest in steps a specific GTX 960 will definitively work. Now that the XPS A10 8700 BIOS update is out, the long Black screen of death issue is gone. Not sure what A11 addresses. My card was $229.

Correct the 8700 comes with a 2x6 PCI connector for graphics cards, and a GTX 960 does not need a PSU upgrade.
If the graphics card has an 8 pin connector, the kit will often include an 8 pin to 6 pin adapter.
MSI and EVGA both include the adapter.
I thought BIOS A11 on the 8700 was for Win10. One of my systems is at A10

my 8700 has the A11 bios and on the dell website it says the only thing A11 did was make windows 10 compatible with the system. I'm not looking for top of the line graphics card just something that will get me that smooth 60 fps in games and drop no lower than to 30 in intense situations. Also I would like to avoid upgrading the PSU.
My concern is that the 745 is oem and I have been told that can sometimes cause issues with something called secure boot when trying to put a new card in. Would the GTX 960 push my PSU to the limit since the 8700 only has a 460w PSU.
I seen a few places on the internet where others way saying about the most the 8700 can handle without a PSU upgrade is a 750 ti which im fine with that if I can get 50+ fps on medium graphic settings

gtx 960 is fine on stock psu, even over clocked gaming models.

I bought my Dell XPS 8700 not intending on playing games but to have a better Desktop for all the multitasking I do and all my other computers couldn't handle it. I just happened to download a Free to Download and Free to Play game after seeing that my old Delta Force Black Hawk Down Team Saber played better than it ever had. I downloaded the Game Heroes and Generals through Steam and had a Shortcut added to my Desktop. I found the games Website and it had a download on there that was Browser based so I downloaded it too,so I could still see my Taskbar and open a browser or something. The game is still going strong and after many Updates it went from Browser mode to Full Screen I have been playing it over a year and a half on my UN-upgraded Desktop and still plays good. So I am happy at the moment but first hint of problems I will update.
