Need to update BIOS from a CD.

I have a new harddrive that is refusing to install Windows (refer to my other post). People have pointed out that I need to update my BIOS. I see plenty of info on how to update BIOS from the Windows side of things, but not too much about how to do it from a CD. I keep getting referred to something called a "BIOS update program" and was wondering is this something you get from dell? What is the name of a good BIOS update program? I generally need tips that will prevent me from frying my computer.

Any help into answering this question would be appreciated

I know Dell BIOS are specific to the model so here is some detailed info:

System: Dell XPS 420

BIOS Version: A07 (02/25/09)

Processor Type: Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Quad CPU

I went to the dell website today and typed in my Service TAG and it came back with this

support.dell.com/.../download.aspx

Release Date: 6/27/2011

Version: A09

Download Type: BIOS  Other Versions

File Format: Windows/DOS

File Size: 761 KB

Is this not the correct information?  Also is there a site with a list of the CORRECT dell XPS 420 BIOS (version A07) settings?

You have the latest bios for your system. There is none for you to update.

Hello bhatcher73

The link you point to is for an OptiPlex 330, is this what you have or XPS 420 ??

If you have the XPS 420, you should trust   Davet50  information.

I missed typed the service tag and I got to the same page that you got to. However, the release date on the A07 is 5/12/2009 and the release date on my BIOS is 02/25/09. So I still need the info on updating the BIOS to its current version. Just so I can scratch that out as a possible problem

I think you just have BIOS set wrong, so you don't need to update anything. See my response in your other thread.

I updated the BIOS of a Vostro 220s using a bootable floppy and a USB flash drive. A newer 2gb flash drive did not work, but an older 256mb one did.
