My new monitor arrived today but I cannot connect it with the cables enclosed. My old Inspiron 580 was bought in 2010 and my old monitor used the VGA socket.
The cables supplied with the new monitor are USB 3.0 upstream cable and a DP to mDP cable. There doesn't seem to be a mDP socket on my desktop so how can I connect the monitor?
My first question to the Dell sales person was "Would this new monitor be compatible with my old Inspiron 580 desktop i.e., regarding connectivity?" He said Yes it would.
Any help would be much appreciated - but not too technical please.

The 1GB ATI Radeon HD5450 graphics card, show it as having a HDMI connector, as does the Dell UltraSharp 24 InfinityEdge U2417H monitor, you could use a HDMI cable similar to this:

Thank you so much for your very helpful reply. As you can probably see, I am not a techie and I feel that the Sales Agent should have checked this with me especially as I had asked the question about compatability.
As you suggest I have reposted my question under Peripherals/Monitors and will get back to the Sales Agent for him to put the situation right. I have taken photographs of the back of the pc workstation showing the 3 input connectors but unsure how to download photo on here so you can see.
