No Sound Dell Dimension 3000?

Alright, I just reformatted my Dimension 3000. I have a CD thats supposed to have drivers and such on it, but the only thing that comes up is something about setting up a modem or whatnot. When I go to My Computer and click on it, there is a bunch of files, but they mean nothing to me, and I don't know what to do with them.

So anyways I plugged in my speakers and they don't work with anything, and I was assuming I needed some sort of driver, but when I went to the Dell Support and picked my computer, only one thing came up, and when I tried it, it said the "Audio files will not work with the hardware" or something like that. I assume that the driver could be on the disc I have, but I don't know where on the disc it would be.

What do I need to do?

Re: No Sound Dell Dimension 3000?

First thing you need to do is install your desktop system software and chipset drivers to get your hardware properly recognized.  See the link below for Dell's driver install order:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/document?c=us&docid=1A0C0937D62A8739E...

If you get them from the web site they're more likely to be current.

Re: No Sound Dell Dimension 3000?

Hello,

If I may add to the above answer ...

Note: Some devices may not function properly if the drivers are installed out of order.

Install your version of Windows.

Install the following software and drivers in the order listed below.

***** 1.***** Desktop System Software (DSS) or Notebook System Software (NSS) - A vital utility that provides critical updates and patches for the operating system. If you are reinstalling the operating system or updating all the computer’s drivers, it is imperative that this software be installed first.
This is located under the System and Configuration Utilities Category on the Drivers and Downloads page. The DSS or NSS may not be required for some systems that shipped with Windows Vista installed. If your download page has a DSS or NSS file, "It is required".
2. Chipset - Helps Windows control system board components and controllers. This is located under the Chipset Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
3. Video Adapter - Enhances video performance. This is located under the Video Adapter Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
4. Network Interface Card (NIC) - Enhances the network controller for Internet or network access. This is located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
5. Audio Adapter - Enables and enhances the audio controller. This is located under the Audio Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
6. Modem - Allows dialup capability. This is located under the Communication Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
7. Wireless Network Card - Enables and enhances the wireless network controller. This is located under the Network Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
8. Touchpad, Pointer, Trackstick, Mice, and Keyboards - Enhances the pointing device features. This is located under the Mouse & Keyboards Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
9. Other Devices
* Bluetooth Module
This is located under the Communication Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
* Dell Wireless Mobile Broadband Cards
This is located under the Communication Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.
* PCMCIA/Smartcard controller
This is located under the Security Category on the Drivers and Downloads page.

Dell drivers and downloads page http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/. Input your service tag number to get the required drivers for your system, 'as shipped'.

NOTE: If your system download page offers a DSS or NSS file in the 'System and Configuration Utilities' Category. And you have already tried to install some drivers, you will need to reboot in Safe Mode to install the DSS or NSS file, and the chipset. Then reboot the system and install the rest of the drivers in the correct order.

I intalled everything in that order, and when I got to the audio driver, I still get a message saying "The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware."

Re: No Sound Dell Dimension 3000?

Any chance you have a PCI sound card instead of the standard integrated audio on the motherboard?  If you do, the speakers plug into a card in a PCI slot near the bottom; integrated jacks are near the middle of the tower.

Don't know what sound options came with the 3000, but if it is a sound card you'd need to identify which one it is to see if you can get drivers for it.   Dell often don't list those drivers on the site; they'd be on their own CD.

Another thing to check:  if it is the integrated audio, go into your BIOS (system setup) and make sure the onboard audio controller is enabled (details for the 3000 below):

Hello again,

Where did you find the audio driver that you are trying to use? If you have Windows XP and still use audio on the motherboard and not an installed sound card, and you correctly installed the DSS file and chipset file, the audio drivers should already be installed by those two files.

There was another reply to you with an order list on installing. Did you use the list that I posted, or the other? And what version of Windows do you have now?

If you use this link and input your service tag, it will point you to files needed 'as the system shipped'. But if for some reason Dell made a mistake listing your hardware when the service tag was created, or if the audio was changed after the computer shipped these drivers will not show right.

If you use this page with Internet Explorer, go through the steps and it will scan your system as it is now and list the required drivers for your computer.

Re: No Sound Dell Dimension 3000?

I love how after a format of my computer, I have to go to my bios and go to Legacy Options(or something like that) and go to Sound and click "on". It was preset to off.

Then it found my speakers but it did not work. So I installed the audio driver, and now the sounds works.

Thanks anyways.
