Only get grayscale after changing video card

I had to switch out my video card on my XPS8300.  It has a display port instead of an HDMI.  So I put a cable on it to go from the display port to the HDMI on my Dell 24" monitor.  However, it only displays grayscale.  If I use safe mode, it displays in color. The windows banner comes up in color but by time it gets to the password page it is grayscale.  I use Win10.  I saw a forum from a few years ago regarding this but none of those suggestions worked.  I can't remember the video card I put in but I know it is an AMD card.

95 PERCENT of 'Radeon HD series" cards are now legacy.  This means the Automatic driver and the Current Catalyst driver DO NOT SUPPORT OR DETECT the old Radeon HD 8000 7000 6000 5000 series the Directx 10 HD 4000 3000 2000 series is an even older Legacy Version.

That means that DOTNET  must be re-installed manually via control panel add features to windows AND legacy direct play must also be added back Manually AND Direct X 10 June 2010 must be reinstalled manually and the LEGACY Driver must be installed MANUALLY.

Directx June 2010 redist before installing the video drivers.

DOT NET 2.0 3.5 4.6 before installing Catalyst Drivers.

Download the file and extract into a folder then run DXSETUP.EXE as administrator.

Download details: DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)

directx_Jun2010_redist.exe
95.6MB
Supported Operating Systems:Windows 10,8.1, 8.0,  7;Windows Server 2003;Windows Server 2008;Windows Vista;Windows XP Service Pack 3

You have to install Legacy Direct play and DX9 and DX10 drivers from the Directx June 2010 patch.

You download the file and extract to a folder then run DXSETUP.EXE as administrator.

Before previous drivers will work in windows 8 or 10 you have to enable legacy features like DOTNET 2.0 3.5  and Directshow.  You must then install DIRECTX JUNE 2010 DRIVERS by downloading the file and extracting into a folder and running DXSETUP.exe.

Directx June 2010 which you download and extract to a FOLDER then run DXsetup.exe as administrator.

in control panel, all control panel items,  programs and features, Turn windows features on and off.  You have to be ONLINE when you do this because it will insist on downloading from the internet.

Enable dotnet 2.0 3.5

enable legacy directshow.

Install Directx June 2010 Patch.

Legacy audio APIs such as DirectSound, DirectShow, and the waveOutXxx functions enable applications to get and set the volume levels of audio streams.

Windows Media Source Filter. This behavior was maintained to ensure backward compatibility with applications that used the Windows Media Player 6.4. New applications should use the newer versions of QASF, which make the WM ASF Reader filter the default filter for playing ASF files.

There are 3 sizes.

ANY new Radeon Software Crimson Edition driver set, AMD has published a new page on their driver site announcing that video cards based on the company’s pre-Graphics Core Next architectures have been moved to legacy status. This means that GPUs based on the company’s VLIW5 and VLIW4 architectures – the Evergreen and Northern Islands families – have been retired and will no longer be supported.   15.7.1 is the last WHQL Driver .

What is the Model of the card?   Legacy just means you have to install drivers manually not that the card doesn't work.

I bought the graphics card Dell said what a fit for my XPS8300 machine.  Why would they recommend a legacy card that I can't get current support for?  Do you have a suggestion for a card that would fit?  I am not a gamer...I use my machine for documents, financial software, internet etc.

TO: Speedstep.  I'm sorry, I am having a little trouble following the order of steps you are suggesting.  Can you simply the order with maybe less verbiage?  Thanks.

Alternately, IMHO, you should simply dump the AMD card and get yourself a new nVidia one. Unlike AMD, nVidia is providing MUCH BETTER support for older cards. I don't understand at all what AMD is doing; the HD 7000/8000 and R5 cards really aren't that old. If their intention is to get people to upgrade, it has worked beautifully for me ... I now own an nVidia GTX 750 and GTX 1050Ti ... problem solved :)

Hi areyouoldalso (why advertise it? :)) ...

Since you didn't tell us what AMD card you have, we can't know for sure what would work. The way to figure that out is to type msinfo in the "Ask me anything" box and press Enter. It will bring up system information. From there you can click on the Components + sign on the left and then click on Display. The program will tell you what card you have in the right panel.

Let me help clarify what was given to you in the post above ...

All of the HD cards will work with Windows 10; however those below the HD 7700 series (and, apparently the R5 cards listed) won't use the latest version of software from AMD (and AMD won't provide automatic updates). Instead, if you have an HD 5000 - 7600 card, Windows 10 will detect it and automatically install the last driver provided by AMD to Microsoft when it was putting together the operating system in 2015.

If you have less than HD 5000, Windows 10 will see the card as a generic card - after you've deleted the Display Adapter from the Device Manager. That is a poor solution, so what you need to do is to download the last driver/catalyst control panel from AMD for the HD 4000 and below cards, install that, and then let Windows find the last 2015 driver. Here's the link for that: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/Driver-Support-for-AMD-Radeon%E2%84%A2-HD-4000,-HD-3000,-HD-2000-and-older-Series.aspx.

I have no idea why I'm getting the ASPX thing ... Just click on it and it will redirect to AMD's page. Weird ...

I'm sorry, I had no intention of offending you...I realize you are simply being nice trying to help me.  The msinfo tells me I have a ATI Radeon HD 5400 Series

you're a genius!!!  I followed your suggestion "after you've deleted the Display Adapter from the Device Manager. ", i restarted the machine and asked MS to do an update.  It updated the driver and it came up in color.  Thank You, Thank You.

Happy to have helped and pleased that it was that easy. I guess your issue was a corrupted driver.
