The following processors have been tested by Dell for Optiplex 760 and are the available options:

You can upgrade to Windows Vista 64 bit. As to which option is better, XP Professional 64 Bit or Vista 64 bit, I would say it depends on your requirements and which environment you are used to.

If the pc works out I will definitely upgrade to a 64 bit version initially, then a quad later on. Upgrading to a quad will mean removing the old 'E' mobo & fitting a 'Q' one, but that shouldn't be that difficult?

760 hasn't arrived yet but it will probably have the 32 bit Vista Business o/s - that's the first upgrade, to 64 bit so I can utilise more Ram.

The motherboard would have to be replaced to upgrade the processor. You might have to upgrade the power supply as well.

Motherboard and Processor are the 2 most expensive components on a computer. In addition, you would be upgrading the memory, operating system and possibly, the power supply. I would suggest that you consider a new system as it might work out cheaper and would also get you the latest technology (Core i3/i5/i7 processor with Windows 7 64 bit, after 10/26/2012, Windows 8 would also be available as an option).

XP64 bit is an orphan OS and very few if any drivers are current for it.  Goes EOL EOS very very soon.

If you want to do windows 7 64 bit you had better buy it within the next few days as Windows 8 comes out in less than 30 days.

All copies of 7 will dry up.

Sounds like I will persevere with Vista 64 bit then. Mobos for Q series 760s are still around and the cpu upgrade is a current Intel quad processor. The nice thing about Dells is that there are so many of them produced it is not difficult to pick up replacement parts or upgrades. I fitted what looked like a brand new PSU - but obviously refurbished -  into an Optiplex GX270 about six months ago & it worked straight out of the box. I think the GX270s are older even than the 760 cos it's a Pentium 4 pc. I upgraded it to XP Pro to utilise more memory.

@cgonzalezuk: remove your service tag (per policy) and better start new post. Which processor you have now - there are multiple motherboards came with this model, not all can accept quads.

Can you advise on which processors can be install on a 760sff (service tag Service tag removed per privacy policy>) without replacing the power supply/system board.

Also is a larger power supply than the 305W unit required when using Quad Core CPU in the Smith Tower.

Is there a copper heatpipe Heatsink?  Looks like the precision 380/390/XPS 410/420 heatsink.

GuravS, based on your answer here, I just bought and installed an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 processor in my Optiplex 760 USFF. All I get is "Incompatible Processor," even after updating the BIOS, chiset, etc. Any ideas?

Are you sure the mobo supports a quad core cpu? Not all 760s are quad models. I at first wondered if I could upgrade to a quad core but I'd need a new mobo.
