My wife has an Optiplex 380 - the middle sized one out of the three models, whatever that's called...
I want to fit an internal card reader in the bay that was (I assume) originally for a 3.5" floppy drive. I have a card reader; I have a USB card to give me the required pin header inside the case (I can't find one on the motherboard). I can link this all up and it works.
However I can't figure out how to mechanically fix the reader in position. The HDD and DVD drive have plastic caddies, but despite searching the Internet I can't find out what's needed to hold a floppy drive. I have yet to find a photo of an Optiplex 380 with a floppy drive, so maybe that option was never made available.
If such a thing exists, I'd be grateful for any pointers to where I could buy one.
This option did exist as it also existed with the 980. You have to remove the DVD and use ODD Card Reader HDD Caddy NR95F with GV721 and 1YMGT. The issue with this is it requires a special power cable for the DVD as its using a laptop Size DVD in place of the 5.25 inch DVD Drive.
This one seems to have all the wires except sata data cable for the DVD
GV721 is the Reader
NR95F is the Bracket
1YMGT is the DVD Drive to sata Power Cable
Not sure what the special power and Sata cable is for the dvd or the Cable for the FLEX BAY connection. It might be FH439 or GH005 but im not sure.
Dell Alienware Aurora FlexBay Card Reader Media Housing Carrier Assembly C439M would also work but remove the DVD.
Thanks SpeedStep. It seems like an odd move to cram DVD and card reader into the same bay while leaving a perfectly good 3.5" bay vacant, but if that's all that's available then so be it.
However your answer does give me an idea. We're unlikely to need the DVD drive, certainly not day-to-day, and we have a USB drive in case something needs installing. I could just take out the DVD drive, and use an adaptor to mount the card reader in there. Food for thought, anyway. I can try it at no additional cost, at least. 🙂
Yes you can do that the Aurora Adapter works that way.
