Optiplex 780, Graphics Card Help

Hello,

I'm looking to put a graphics card in my full-size Dell Optiplex 780, but I don't know which cards are compatible.  The slot says PCIe x16, and I need a card that is compatible with VGA.  What do I need to do to determine whether or not a graphics card will be compatible?

RE: Graphics Card Help

Full Size cards don't fit.  Short cards fit and they MUST BE only 1 slot wide. The card must not be more than 75W unless you upgrade to Corsair CS750M which is the recommended minimum for a 780 mini tower.  The 8800 GT Single Slot Card is the highest performance card that fits into the case.   If you want to use real cards you have to buy a Precision T3500.

Recommended Card for the 305W stock power supply in the Tower is

 Radeon HD 7750 1GB, GDDR5

(Now called R7 250)

Another card I can recommend (For a Mini Tower) because I've used it is an

ASUS GT740-2GD3-CSM GeForce GT 740 2GB 128-Bit

RE: Optiplex 780, Graphics Card Help

The 8800 GT Single Slot Card is the highest performance card that fits into the case.

The 8800GT is an old card, and there are faster, more-efficient alternatives available today. Some may occupy two slots, but they are shorter than the old 8800GT, and thus will fit this chassis.

RE: Optiplex 780, Graphics Card Help

Wrong.

2 SLOT Wide cards will NOT Physically go in the slot.

I do agree that the HD 7750 aka R7 250 works better with newer games than the 8800GT but in DX9 mode its a lot faster than the R7 250.

I have not found Single Slot versions of the 750TI .  If the card has vents on the other side you could hack that off with tin snips and get it to go into the case.

There are versions of the GT740 that are single slot.

2Slot cards like this one however are a non starter even though they are "short"

RE: Optiplex 780, Graphics Card Help

Just got a 780 from work for free and put a SSD drive and 8 gb memory in it. Want to put a good video card in it for my daughter who loves WOW. I noticed you suggest the GT740 2gb card. That is a 3.0 card will that run in the 780 and if so do I need to upgrade the PSU to at least a 450?

I also found a GT730 2.0 card on Newegg for $70 bucks http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500357 would this work? and would I also need to upgrade the PSU?

Thanks for you time.

RE: Optiplex 780, Graphics Card Help

The GT710 730 740 as long as they are SINGLE SLOT cards work fine.  Cards that Do not have AUX PCI-E video power are 75W and work fine with Dell Towers with Stock 305W power supply. The 730 is 400 percent slower than the 740.

  • 96 CUDA Cores
  • 2GB 128-Bit DDR3
  • PCI Express 2.0 x16

The performance of the 740 vs the inferior 730 or 720 is VERY noticeable in WOW. So for $26 more you get 400 percent more performance.

The best performance is had by downloading and installing Directx June 2010 into a folder then extract and run DXsetup.exe.

Then after wow is installed set the game settings to DirectX 9 mode instead of Directx 11 mode.

  • 384 CUDA Cores
  • 2GB 128-Bit DDR3
  • PCI Express 3.0

RE: Optiplex 780, Graphics Card Help

Hi, I have a OptiPlex 780 SFF currently running with a Nvidia Geforce 9300 GE video card on dual monitors. I'm looking to upgrade to a better card that supports two monitors + one TV out (HDMI) at the same time. The 9300 only supports two outputs at a time (i.e. two monitors or 1 monitor + TV). Since my system has a 235w PSU, what can you recommend without having to upgrade the PSU to 300W+?

RE: Optiplex 780, Graphics Card Help

Would the Nvidia Quadro FX3800 fit the OptiPlex 780 mini tower if not, would the ATi FirePRO 3D V4800 fit?
