Optiplex 780 - memory compatibility
Brand manufacturers publish lists of memory modules that are guaranteed with Optiplex 780 MT. Examples:

How big is a chance a random memory module
- not listed in lists of brand manufacturers (see above)
- within Dell's specifications, i.e. non-ECC, 1066 or 1333, max 4GB per slot)
would work with Optiplex 780?
Is there a way how to increase the chance a new memory would work, e.g. choosing Single Rank / Double Rank, choosing a manufacturer etc.?

Thank you for the hint. The problem is these Dell memory sticks are twice as expensive as standard ones, and I don't count overseas shipping and duty tariffs.
Concerning my original questions - how "much" is Optiplex 780 "incompatible"? How is the chance a random memory stick would work in Optiplex 780?

I would not rely on them to provide the correct memory. Below are the Dell part numbers for the 4GB memory sticks you can use when searching the internet =
8C7JC, 9V62Y, 60KD4, HKYF9, P382H (1333Mhz)
N852H (1066MHz)
For example, doing a search for "dell part 8C7JC" will yield good results of our OEM memory.

There is no way we can know this. We only tested ours.

Ok, maybe Optiplex owners will share their experience here.
Chris M, one slightly off-topic question: Are newer Dell desktops more "memory-compatible", or does Dell continue to care about Dell's memory modules only?

Again, we only validate ours. We cannot speak to retail memory.

I think I understand.
While motherboard manufacturers create rather large "Memory Qualified Vendors Lists",
your "Memory Qualified Vendors Lists" are always limited to Dell's memory modules.

I upgraded a lab OptiPlex 780 with an 8 GB (2×4 GB) Crucial RAM kit 2 days ago. I have migrated 3 of these systems in the last week from Windows XP 32 Bit to Windows 7 64 Bit with a complete clean install involving a secure wipe, Windows 7 64 Bit installation, WSUS Offline Update, drivers installed in the correct order and finally new factory settings with Dell Backup and Recovery. I will likely tackle a 4th system next week. Probably I will get another 3 more 8 GB RAM kits for the other 3 systems.
Crucial guarantee that their RAM is compatible if you use their system scanner or select your model.

This kit works perfectly, I took my chances when reviewers stated that it would run in the Optiplex 780, purchased two kits for 16GB total.

Though have no idea of why it's running at 532MHz, rather than 800, which is the norm for 1600MHz kits. Maybe the RAM is that way to be compatible with more computers, it's likely a chipset limitation.
What boils my blood the most though, is that the upgrade didn't raise my WEI RAM score at all, still at 7.3. While I didn't expect 7.9, did expect somewhere in the range of 7.5, after all, this is 16GB RAM we're discussing.
