Optiplex 990 cannot update?

Hi,

Have a refurbished Dell Optiplex 990. It seems to work okay - had to reset the time & date several times - but when I did a Belarc profile on it I noticed scores of missing Microsoft Updates. I ran the updater but it has not attempted to address all the missing updates. I triggered a Windows Update Standalone Installer as I attempted to manually update one of the missing downloads, but all this does is 'searching for updates...', I think it has hung or is going round in a loop?

Is there any way I can get these downloads started please? - some of them are 'critical'

Many thanks.

If this is Windows 7 SP1, the update components have changed. The fix is to turn off automatic updates, install KB3020369 and then install KB3172605, after which automatic updates can be turned back on.

I used this fix on a fresh Windows 7 SP1 install, and the several hundred Windows Updates that followed quickly became available.

How do I do this please? The last time I downloaded a Microsoft Windows update the file hung on opening because it could not find the programme to activate it.

Download them from Microsoft's site. They open with the Windows Installer, which is part of Windows.

Also, I am not given the option to 'Save or Run' only 'Save as' so I can't manually run the download. As soon as you save the Installer goes into its loop and that's it. No updates are downloaded.

Negative,

This is what happens when I download any MS update - the green line just goes on forever...

And this is what I see when I click on Windows Updates on the 990. Something is wrong here - why else the red cross mark please?

Advice appreciated with thanks.

You're not doing what he said...

Manually download KB3020369 here and KB3172605 here. Now turn Windows Update off.

Then double-click on the KB3020369 download and when it's finished double-click on the KB3172605 download. Reboot when they're done.

Now turn Windows Update on again and it should find all the updates you need.

Fed up with watching the Microsoft Installer going round in circles, on a hunch I opted for Internet Explorer to open those downloads instead. It did the trick. The downloads are now appearing and installing, 204 so far. Hopefully this post may prevent others pulling their hair out over this issue, thanks. Will update by & by.

You're still not doing it right...!  :emotion-7:

You're supposed to do this manually, NOT with Windows Update.

Just go to folder where you saved the 2  downloaded files and double-click on the KB3020369 file. That will launch the Windows Installer which will install the update. Then double-click on the other downloaded KB file and let Windows Installer install that one too.

Now reboot, turn WU on again and let it look for updates.

Have told Updates not to update and manually downloaded  KB3020369. Now the green line is doing its thing again (as above) - there is no option to run the downloaded file, it automatically appears in a saved folder which opens. The only option then is to select and click 'okay'. Then the green line goes into its loop again.

But Ron, Windows Installer was the problem - read up the post - I even included a screen shot of Windows Installer green lining, 'going round in circles'. Windows Installer was preventing the downloads from opening.

That's why I had to open the downloads with Explorer, been watching the Windows Installer green-lining for 12 hours now, enough is enough.

Bump.

Well, so far so good.

I have had similar issues on fresh installs of windows 7 sp1.  for some reason, the windows update service needs to be fixed.  it can be fixed by using the Microsoft Fix It tool sometimes.

Also, have you updated BIOS?  Not that this is part of your problem, I just think it's a good thing to do for stability purposes.
