Optiplex GX620 upgrade to dual core

Hi,

I read many posts about the opportunity to upgrade an Optiplex GX620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium D. upgrading up to a D 930 or a D 960 seems good (according to the feedbacks).

Intel developed a lot of Dual Core processors. For example Pentium E 5500

When we look at the specs we can see that the socket is the same (LGA 775), and the FSB (800 mhz required) also. The voltage of the E5500 seems to match with the voltage of the D or 4 . I understand that E5500 has a smaller TDP (65 W) than a pentium D and should not give problem with heat..

My question is : can we upgrade an optiplex GX 620 from a Pentium 4 to a pentium E 5500 ? and, if it is, does it worth it?

Short Answer NO you cannot.

The E5500 will not work in the 620.

Bios MUST BE UPDATED Before changing CPU.

Max CPU is the Dual Core Smithfield D820 or D840 CPU  Pentium D

While the answer is correct: NO, as E series pentiums  from 2010 normally require a chipset newer than the 945 in the gx620.  I believe that your CPU list is incorrect.

Messages on this forum and others, and a quick review of the BIOS update readmes indicates that later P4D Presler cpus such as the 915, 920, 945, etc _DO_ work in a GX620.

However with no updated list from Dell, it is difficult to say exactly which models.  Can it support say, a 960 stepping D0? C1?   the HT 3.8Ghz  670's were a standard part, so I wouldn't be surprised if the clock could get to 3.6Ghz anyway.

FYI

Just upgraded my Optiplex GX620 CPU:

From a Pentium 4 521, 2.80GHz

To a Pentium D 945, 3.4GHz - refurbished for $40

The boot up Dell splashscreen also updated itself and now displays the Pentium D logo instead of the Pentium 4 logo

I have successfully upgraded my GX620 MT to a Core 2 Duo 6300. It runs quieter and cooler than the Pentium D 960 it replaced. It has updated Bios A11. I would think if it would run the 6300, it should run the 6600, possibly the Q6600 Kentfield....Remember that I am talking about the Core 2 Duos....not the Pentium Dual series.

Hello,

Can you report the actual front side bus and memory clock frequencies that you are seeing on your GX620?

And can you confirm that the motherboard in your GX620 is actually a GX620 motherboard and that, sometime in the past, maybe by someone else, the motherboard wasn't replaced with that from another Optiplex, like a 745?

The Pentium D960 Definitely works with BIOS A11.

I was actually wondering this myself recently and I am about to find out soon enough if an Intel E5800 will work on the GX620

I am already doubting it having done further research into the matter.

The motherboard that the GX620 uses is a Dell 0F8098 with the 945G/GZ chipset with an I/O controller in the ICH7 family...

My research has shown me that the Intel E-5 series requires the ICH10 or ICH10R I/O Controller in most chipsets, and the 945G chipsets aren't even supported.

This really is a bummer seeing as how I have just ordered an E5800 off ebay without knowing that until like 30 minutes ago...

There's a bright side to the story though, I dug in a little deeper and found out that the E-4 series of the Core 2 Duo's is actually compatible with our chipset.

1. Core 2 Duo E4700 runs on the 800Mhz FSB like the motherboard requires

So now I am hoping to buy an E4700 and see if it works on the GX620. Another option would be to replace the GX620 motherboard with one from an Optiplex 760. I found some on Ebay for about 60 dollars.

I have an GX 620 and the other PC whick has the same generation of chipset (i945). The fact is that  with i945 chipset on the other PC i own (famous MB producer), I could reach till E8500 Core 2 Duo max, and the E6800 for the Pentium Dual Core. In theory i945 can handle 1066FSB and (1333 by overclocking).It cannot in theory handle any quad core, and the quad support starts with i946 series.

The issue can be resolved by writing the BIOS (A12 maybe:):) that will open(unlock) all the possibilities of the 945 chipset.

Bios A12 does not exist.  There will be no further updates.  The 620 is end of life.

Hello and thank you all for the interest show for this thread

Yes , A12 does not exist for the GX620 and we know that 620 is end of life. But this thead was opened beacause there are still plenty of 620 in use around the world. Most of its users think it is a good machine, and we would like to use it at the most of its real abilities ... instead of staying under a forecasted obdolescence.

So. If someone hase the technical knowdge to make the gx620 going further, fell free to share it .

I read this thread carefully... but unfortunately not carefully enough!

You are tho only person that claims to have installed a 6300 CPU into a GX620. On the strength of your assertion and the knowledgeable tone of your post I bought an  "INTEL CORE 2 DUO 6300 SL9TA 1.86GHz/2M/1066 CPU SOCKET LGA775" for £18 from ebay.....

And found it wouldn't work.

On re reading the thread it appears you must be wrong or doing something different, like a different processor, or motherboard or BIOS. Opinion seems clear that the A11 Bios from Dell is the latest, and no further updates will be provided. Is there ANOTHER SOURCE FOR A BIOS eg for the chipset, and HAS ANYONE GOT IT WORKING?

I may be able to return the 6300 CPU, and its only a small loss, but the delay and failed expectations are a let down!

I'm probably going to try for a "Pentium D 945 3.4G/4M/800 CPU / PROCESSOR LGA775" as the D960 is not available from the UK on ebay.. Both these have more support on the forums.

If you did use the 6300 chip in the GX620, please explain how. (Motherboard, BIOS etc...)

The CHIPSET and BIOS Microcode for A11 on the GX620 DOES NOT SUPPORT Core2 duo.

Pentium D 960 is max with the copper heatpipe heatsink.

You cannot use an E5500.
