Optiplex GX620 with Windows 7 - 64bit

I have Windows 8 x64 installed on mine.

When it has an EMT64 capable Processor Yes. The ONLY Issue I have found is the Audio Driver requires manual download and install.

The DOWNLOAD Version or even the upgrade DVD of WIN8 sits on the 4 blue square windows screen for a VERY VERY LONG TIME but it does eventually work. Windows 7 and 8 are DVD and therefore REQUIRE a good DVD Drive.

There are ZERO issues  for installing Windows 7 AND

other than the NX Bit requirement for Windows 8 on a GX620. Its a non issue.

In CMOS under security the NX Bit is called (Execute Disable Bit). 

This option DOES NOT SHOW For OLD versions of the bios and or

if the processor DOES NOT Support it. 

ALL VERSIONS of the Pentium D processor support this and therefore work with windows 8.

Bios A11 should probably be done BEFORE trying it however.

The Soundmax driver comes from Microsoft Catalog.

Most of the hardware uses Native Windows 7 Drivers with the exception of the Audio Codec.

They have recently updated the Microsoft catalog for that codec to say

Windows 8 is reporting that about 512mb is reserved for the hardware. 3.5gb is enough for the typical user, and apparently the GX620 will go to 8gb, although I haven't tried it myself.

There is also a PAE/NX/SSE2 requirement in Windows 8

Although the GX620 board will see 8 gigs in BIOS A11
The GX620 with x64 os on the system will only allow 3.5 gigs total.

This feature is typically found in the Advanced or Security tabs within the BIOS settings,
and can be referred to by a variety of names, including but not limited to:

·        No Execute Memory Protect

·        Execute Disabled Memory Protection

·        EDB (Execute Disabled Bit)

·        EVP (Enhanced Virus Protection)

 

If the BIOS setting for the NX (XD, EDB, or EVP) support option is not available on your system,
you may need to update the BIOS.  Note that some very old Pentium 4 processors may not contain these features
and will be incompatible with Windows 8.

I could get it to boot with XP 32 but not with windows 7 x64 or Live Linux X64.

Black Screen of death.  2 x 2 gig modules works fine however which is good news for GX520 owners and GX620 SFF owners.

Been trying to get Win 8.1 x64 running on my GX620 (curious as to what the SFF suffix means?).   It has 4GB and ATI graphics card.   Anyway, 32bit Enterprise Eval installed just fine, that's what I running as I type this.   Unfortunately, x64 Enterprise Eval and DSP OEI disks both failing with the 4 squares on the screen, then it reboots.  I have an A11 bios and have NX bit enabled.   Should I give up and just try to get an OEM version of the 32 bit disk, or is there any hope?

Just figured out that SFF is Small Form Factor.   Did those models have a different Motherboard?

The CPU is incompatible with Windows 8.1 x64, as that OS requires support for new instructions.

You can install Windows 7 x64 or Windows 8 x64.

Being a long time UNIX guy, I hate black box stuff with no console or logs (like this).   Drives me crazy.  I'm going to try the suggestions from John Rubdy, as soon as I get the chance.   Have you already tried something like this?    

Guys, Windows 8.1 x64 uses new CPU instructions not present in the GX620's processor and that's why it won't work with that model.

Would it be possible to upgrade from 8.1 Enterprise 32 bit to 8.1 Pro 64 bit?

NO no version of windows XP / VISTA/ 7 /8 / 8.1 has a 32 bit to 64 bit upgrade.  

There are no win7 or win8 or win8.1 UPGRADES from XP Period end. Its Always a clean install.

That said it will not let you install x64 version from the download on 32 bit XP.  If you want X64 from the Download then you MUST HAVE X64 version of XP to install from.

You must clean install from an X64 or X86 disk.  Only VISTA SP2 and WIN7SP1 can upgrade to either 32 or 64 bit based on starting out with 32 or 64 bit.  There are no CROSS 32 to 64 or 64 to 32 upgrades ever any version period end.

NX aka Execute Disable Bit MUST BE ENABLED in BIOS A11 under Security.

Not all cpu's that came with the GX620 support all 3 required features.

Just as INTEL VT is not shown in bios when the CPU doesn't support it NX is not shown when the CPU doesn't support it.   AFAIKT All pentium D processors support all the features.  Many of the original single core Pentium 4's do not.

Windows 8.0 and 8.1 

If you want to run Windows 8.1 on your PC, here's what it takes:

• Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)  NX is only 1 of the 3 requirements.

• RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

• Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

• Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

It works fine on GX620 with PROPER CPU.   x64 versions require EMT 64 capable CPU.

Bios A11 and Pentium D cpus have this and 8.1 works fine on GX620's with PENTIUM D.

It is possible to have a CPU that supports PAE , NX and SSE2 but NOT EMT64.

MAX CPU Is pentium D 960 with BIOS A11 and Copper heat pipe performance heatsink in the GX620 TOWER.
