Overclocking the XPS 630s Processor: Q6600

It's currently on stock settings: 2.4ghz.

I've researched tempertures/what's safe/etc on it, but I can not find a simple guide on how to do it. (Through BIOS, I know what to do but i really want to make sure I'm doing it correct)

I'm interested in overclocking it to 2.8ghz, Is there any guides I could have or might be able to call dell themselves to get it through it?

Since you have a 1066MHz FSB CPU, the RAM should be set to DDR533, regardless of the fact that you may have DDR667, DDR800 or faster RAM. The PCI-Express bus should be locked at 100MHz. All Spread Spectrum settings should be disabled. Increase CPU frequency from 266MHz to 333MHz.

Results? CPU at 3.0GHz @ 1333MHz FSB with RAM running in sync at DDR667 speed.

not sure , don,t have one. my response was taken off a site that the member had a xps 630, and its what he came up with...he did state that all the settings he posted must be exact , or the 630 would not boot.

might also be a good idea to download core temp , and monitor the cpu temps

if it was me, i would just up the side bus speed a bit, maybe get to 2.5 ghz, and be happy...over-clocking will take a toll on your cpu, the more you over-clock, the less longivity you will get out of it.

i have looked at his settings, and it does look good to me also, i have done some over-clocking, but not with the q6600.

Will most 630s with the Q6600 overclock this easily or is it hit and miss?

All CPUs are different, kind of like a fingerprint.  Some can easily overclock well, others have difficulty.  The motherboard is something else that plays a big factor.  Dell's use of a customized nVidia 650 chipset can make overclocking a bit temperamental.  In any case, start low and start to slowly ease your FSB and CPU MHz and voltages up.  What ronss is correct, although Dell simplifies the BIOS settings where you enter CPU, FSB and memory MHz settings directly such as a 1400MHz FSB value.  There's some good info on overclocking the XPS 630 here if you search for it.

I see you oc'd your q6600 to 3.2ghz.

Wondering if I should raise the voltage? because if I overclock it past 1100mhz it starts to freeze

What do you currently have your CPU, FSB and Chipset voltage set to?

Then yes, you'd need to up your voltages as well.  Here's one article:

Select Advanced Search from the top left of this forum, and type in "630 overclocking".  You find a bunch to read. :smileywink:

not sure what sort of cpu voltage,s are available, with the dell bios, but cpu voltage is the fastest way to burn up a cpu.
