P4 prescott 3.4 over a D 3.0 Processor?

Will I see any improvement upgading to a P4 prescott 650 3.4 over my stock D 3.0 processor? Are the dual cores in my D3.0 going to give better performance than the Prescott single core?  Is there a better dual core I can add?  Is there a better processor that will fit my E510 that would show any improvement? I mean the system works ok but sometimes it seems to be a little laggy.  I am not ready to purchase a new system yet but have a few coins to spend. What about upgrading from Vista 32 bit to windows 7 64?

Dell E510  D 3.0

Upgaded to a 700w power supply, 4GB ram  and a Nvidia 9500GT

I have an E510.  I don't think the P4 Prescott 650 3.4 will work in our model and if it does it may only run at 3.0 because of the Dell custom implementation of the Intel chipset .  There was a recent post from another user that installed a higher speed and it still ran at the 3.0 speed.

Out system will not accept the Core Duo CPU's, only the old D8xxx and D9XX (up to a D945).

I upgraded my CPU from the original D805 to a D925 and to be truthful it was a waste of $$.  I now have a home built with a Quad CPU that I'm using as my main PC, the E510 is relegated to mostly collecting dust.

Are you liking the Windows 7 64?

The P4 prescott 3.4 is the only upgrade Dell told me I could make to the E510. Of course I asked for a product id number so i could look it up on the dell site but the reply was"thats an off the shelf upgrade not listed on retail, but i can add it to your cart" lol... go figure.

I guess I will just save for something new ;)

Thanks,

George

Yes the Win 7, 64 bit is the way to go, for me.  I use the Win 7 64 bit PC for my recording studio PC and the recording program I use, Sonar, is optimized for 64 bit OS and for Win 7.
