PC problem.

I have a friend who can't shut down his computer.  I believe he is running the Windows XP program.
Where should I look to help him with this problem?

If it is a Dell, just hold the power button and it should power off. Check with your friend to see if anything has been recently loaded, i.e. hardware or software. Try booting in Safe Mode and see if the system shuts down correctly. If it does then try a system restore to a previous date and time.  FYI.
