PC2-8500 OCZ's upgrade showing only 667Mhz in my XPS 710

I read many stories of OCZ PC2-8500 upgrades jumping the system up to 800mhz, so I decided what the heck lets give it a try.

Well, didn't work.

Now the question is "Why"?

BTW I enabled SLI/EPP in BIOS.

Any answers much appreciated..

can you link the actual modules please?

and do you have the 590? or the 680i?

my only guesses would be that the epp (profile) is trying to run the memory at 1066mhz and is unable to. additionally,at that speed it would up the voltage somewhere between 2.1-2.3 which may not be stable for the 590 boards. just a though?

the problem is you cannot run 1066 mem on the 590. it only supports 667 or 800. you need to rma and get the 800 mhz version to run on a 590 board.

When you enable the EPP/SLI it tries to run the mem at 1066..does it run if you leave the EPP off?

The thing is, I want it to run at 800mhz and from the info I gathered the PC2-8500 OCZ is suppose to do just that, even though it would like to run at 1066.

Basically the only difference between Epp and standard is that the EPP lowers the Row Address, Ras to Cas, memory bank switch, and Row cycle time in Ntunes.

Idon't know why my xps 710 system runs the OCZ memory at 667mhz while other exact xps 710 systems are running it at 800MHz, all without having to up the FSB.

pc8500 is not supported with your rig,, xps 710-look here-

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps710/en/OM_EN/html/appendix.htm#wp1057811

so if you buy memory at a higher speed than what is supported, it will revert the memory to the max speed supported by the motherboard, which is 667mhz.

Well there you have it the system will only handle up to 667.

I understand what "Dell's Specs" say, but the fact of the matter is, the 590 Sli chipset system is 800 Mhz capable and moreover other xps 710's with OCZ PC2-8500's run at 800Mhz as seen in the many postss on this forum.

Basically the OCZ SLI ready ram is suppose to unlock "Dell's specs" through the EPP/SLI function, but for some reason or another it isn't unlocking mine.

So I would appreciate anyone who is running 800Mhz on their xps 710 telling me exactly how their system is set up.

i sort of surfed the net, and i don,t see anything higher that 667mhz memory running on the xps 710, official that is.,,,,its possible you can run cp 6400,,,,might see if a bios upgrade is needed, possible that might do it.

i am not saying you are wrong, if it runs at 800mhz, sort of wonder why dell doesn,t upgrade the system specs....hope you get it figured out.

I ran the exact memory you have listed on my XPS 700 with the latest bios @ 800MHz., and with EPP enabled, it ran @ 1066MHz.

Do you have the latest bios installed?  XPS 1.4.1 system BIOS

I found a solution..OCZ has a flash program called Spd-z. Basically you can reprogram the memory. Anyways, I just reflashed the memory, restarted the computer and tad dah.. 800 Mhz.

Gdwrnch and all, thanks for taking the time to help me out.l

Yes, that was a mistake when I said 1066Mhz, it was 800MHz on the 700 board, and 1066MHz on the 720 board.

Gotta say, the system is running really well at 800mhz. Couldn't imagine 1066....
