Power supply suggestions for my XPS 8700
My 8700 came with the GeForce GTX 745 and I'm looking to upgrade to the: Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 EVGA Classified Edition ACX Cooler 3Gb GDDR5 It requires 2 eight pin power connections and I'm not sure which oower supply will work, too many options. It recommends at least a 600w power supply so I'd be more interested in a 700w or more to make sure there is not issue. Thanks in advance for any advice! Rob Mesa-AZ

Sasonic X-650 is my go-to standard, and is more than enough for any single graphics card.
Do you already have the GTX 780? If not you might consider a GTX 1060 6GB gaming edition. The newer cards are more power efficient and I think a GTX 1060 is roughly equal to a GTX 780.
A GTX 1060 will work with the OEM power supply. Some GTX 1060 cards need a single 8 pin and if the card does not come with a dual 6 pin to single 8 pin reverse Y adapter, they can be found on eBay for about $7.00 USD shipped.
The other downside of a GTX 780 is the heat from the card. I ran an overclocked GTX 770 in an xps 8700 and it got hot. I cut the front of the case and added an intake fan and it helped, however after upgraded to a GTX 970 it ran much cooler.
The GTX 1060 is slightly faster/more powerful than the 970 and it produces even less heat than the 970 so it should do fine with the stock 8700 case.

Since you are not gaming, I would look at a GTX 1050ti. It will easily work with the stock power supply.
edit: Just looked at the MSI GeForce® GTX 1050 Ti 4GT OC and the power draw is only 75W and does not use a PCI power connector. All the power will come from the PCIe slot.
I've had good success with MSI cards, but EVGA is also a solid brand.

note:
You MUST upgrade the 8700 BIOS to A10 (win7/win81) or A11 (Win10) for any GTX 9xx or GTX 10xx cards to work, and to be clear you need to update it before you install the card or you will get a black screen.
If you are on a budget, you can sell the GTX 745 on eBay for around $50 ( maybe more). After shipping and selling fees it might be $40.

I'm having a hard time finding a used 1060 but did find the 780 (have not purchased it yet... looks like I need to hunt for the 1060. FYI, I'm not a gamer, it's needed to run a 2K Samsung 32" WQHD monitor with a ham radio set up with some demanding software but nothing like gaming needs so maybe there is a better option for a video card? Needs to have a Display port with at least v1.2 config. Thanks

Again, great input Dan. Amazon has it for $149 and I can have it tomorrow and no power supply update needed, sounds like a winner. I'll be sure to updat the bios to A11, it already has A10 ( currently running Win10)
