My suggestion would be to use something else to burn your discs. Since your question is not related to hardware, let me suggest you try the digital entertainment forum under groups. Alternatively, try searching the internet. I know several freeware programs support gapless audio disc burning.
Thanks for the reply. A couple of points, if I may.
Firstly, I'd say that it really is a hardware problem as the MS error message specifically claims that my drive does not support gapless burning. What I need to know is whether MS are correct, in which case it is useless me trying any further to do gapless burning, or whether MS are wrong, in which case I will perservere. As the drive is supplied by Dell is there any part of Dell that I could contact to get an answer to this question?
Secondly, I'd be interested in any suggestions for free software that would enable gapless burning. I have ImgBurn, which I find much better for burning data backup disks, than the MS software. Unfortunately, a bit of googling strongly suggested that it wouldn't be able to do gapless burning. Secondly I found a reference to using Foobar2000, but the method seemed far from simple. Also, having given Foobar2000 a go in the past I found it, to say the least, not for the faint-hearted!
OK, I think I've finally solved it. Despite my earlier comment about ImgBurn I decided, as I had it, to persevere in searching for a way to use it. I finally found a possible method at http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=5555 which uses a cue sheet. I tried it out and it worked - one gapless audio CD!

Have you tried using iTunes for gapless burning?
Of course, this assumes your drive really does support gapless...

CDburnerXP supports gapless.
I'm not an iTunes fan, although I am forced to provide tech support for it.
