Problems installing Win 7 on Optiplex

Greetings and happy New Year to all.

I am working on a Dell Optiplex that is about 4 years old. The hard drive failed, so I have replaced it with a new Western Digital 1 TB drive. I downloaded the Windows 7 ISO from Dell and burned it to a USB stick. Installation appears to go smoothly until the final reboot when you would normally go into the standard Windows process of creating a user name and so forth. At this point, the PC goes into a Windows Recovery Error screen and prompts me to repair the computer. From here, I have tried startup repair, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt, etc., but nothing works. Safe mode with command prompt hangs at the CLASSPNP.SYS line.

I have gone through the setup process 3 time on this system and get the same results each time. I have reformatted the disk with each attempt. Even tried it once from DVD instead of USB. Also tried removing and re-setting the RAM. All hardware passes Dell on-board diags.

I have install Win 7 at least 100 times in the past 5 years or so and never run into anything like this.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Advanced Format Drives REQUIRE F6 Drivers.  Drives larger than 120 gigs and older than 2011 are advanced format.  If you try installing on an ancient 80 gig drive it will work without requiring F6 drivers.  You cannot install the LATEST drivers on OLDER Dells.

Version 9.6 may be the highest.  Drives larger than 2 TB require version 10.1 minimum

The INTEL RST 9.6  F6 Drivers can be put on a USB Flash drive and when AHCI is enabled for Sata operation it will load the drivers and see the disk.  If you do not load RST 9.6 or higher it will not "see the drive" and will not install.  Advanced format 4k drives started arriving in 2011.  At this point ALL NEW Drives are advanced format.  If you have an ancient 120 gig , 80 gig drive it won't need the drivers.   Most 160 Gig, 320 gig , 500 gig etc are 4k Advanced format Drives.

Detailed Description

Installs the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (RAID) driver version 9.6.0.1014 for Intel® Desktop Boards.

Download the driver (STOR_allOS_9.6.0.1014_PV.exe) and one of the following F6 Driver Diskettes (depending on your operating system):

STOR_all32_f6flpy_9.6.0.1014_PV.zip - F6 driver diskette for Windows* 7 (32-bit editions), Windows* Vista* (32-bit editions), Windows XP* Home, Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Media Center Edition.

STOR_all64_f6flpy_9.6.0.1014_PV.zip - F6 driver diskette for Windows 7 (64-bit editions), Windows Vista (64-bit editions) or Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition.

You must manually reinstall DOTNET and the INTEL RST app version that supports your chipset. Otherwise the rst gui will NEVER RUN.

9.6.0.1014

Latest version 15 of the AHCI driver is not compatible with the older chipsets from 2005 thru 2009

For many users installing DOTNET manually and installing RST 9.6 is as far as they can go.

I've installed windows 10 on machines as old as GX620 and they work fine.  They do not however work with AHCI or INTEL RST.

You have to install Legacy Direct play and DX9 and DX10 drivers from the Directx June 2010 patch.

You download the file and extract to a folder then run DXSETUP.EXE as administrator.

Before previous drivers will work in windows 7 or 8 or 10 you have to enable legacy features like DOTNET 2.0 3.5  and Directshow.  You must then install DIRECTX JUNE 2010 DRIVERS by downloading the file and extracting into a folder and running DXSETUP.exe.

Directx June 2010 which you download and extract to a FOLDER then run DXsetup.exe as administrator.

Thanks for the suggestion. The problem turned out to be a BIOS setting for the RAID/SATA adapter.

I installed Windows 7 this afternoon on an OptiPlex 9010 with 1tb SSD without the need for F6 drivers. I have done several other Dells with Windows without F6 drivers, including a Dimension 3100 with 4tb drive.

Error Installing Windows 7 on Advanced Format Disk Drives

Background

The hard disk drive industry is transitioning to larger physical sector sizes called Advanced Format. The default sector size has been 512 bytes since the advent of the personal computer. Advanced Format sectors are also called 4K sectors because each physical sector now holds 4096 bytes. While the physical size is 4K, the disk drive processor presents the data over the cables to the computer as ordinary 512 byte sectors. This is called 512 byte emulation, or 512e. Sometimes Advanced Format drives are shown as 4K/512e, comparing the physical and logical sizes, where eight 512e sectors are sent for each 4K sector.

Understandably, the operating system and important disk device drivers are also receiving updates to reflect optimization for Advanced Format drives. Both Windows 7 and Windows Vista detect Advanced Format drives out of the box. Windows XP, however, does not detect the new format. Fortunately, because the drives send their data to the computer in the same ways they always have, Windows XP and even old DOS are unaware of any differences and communicate with the drive the same as before.

Seagate Momentus drives released since 2011 utilize the Advanced Format.

A Device Driver Problem

Device drivers for disk drives are also changing to accommodate Advanced Format. Because the controller chipsets for disk drives are embedded within the motherboard, these device drivers are optimized to support features like RAID options and they are supplied by the chipset manufacturer or OEM. Current Microsoft operating systems also use a default device driver that supports standard installations.

Unfortunately, the Intel device driver (Intel MSM 8.9.0.1023) bundled with the Windows 7 Installation CD may get confused by the Advanced Format. Most often, the installation process selects other drivers for use with the system configuration resulting in error-free installation of Windows 7. However, in some cases, where the notebook hardware specifically requires the Intel MSM driver, a RAID mode is chosen, or a manual installation is forced with the driver, an error can occur and the installation halts.

The error displays the message “Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer’s hardware”.
