Processors supported by 0C27VV Dell Motherboard

I have a Dell Optiplex 780 mini-tower.  It has the 0C27VV motherboard.

According to the Technical Guidebook for the Optiplex 780, this motherboard will support a Q9650 Core 2 Quad processor.  BUT there is this paragraph:

PROCESSOR
NOTE: Global Standard Products (GSP) are a subset of Dell’s relationship products that are managed for availability and synchro-nized transitions on a worldwide basis. They ensure the same platform is available for purchase globally. This allows customers to reduce the number of configurations managed on a worldwide basis, thereby reducing their costs. They also enable companies to implement global IT standards by locking in specific product configurations worldwide. The following GSP processors identified below will be made available to Dell customers.

In the associated table, under the Mini-Tower is the entry "X-GSP" --- what does that mean?

In other words, I'd like to know that if i purchase an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 processor, will it work in the 0C27VV motherboard?

thanks,

Marvin

Hey, i have the same system and decided the it IS capable of supporting the quad.

Here is the line for my system - Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E8500/3.16GHz, 6M, 1333FSB X-GSP

i have the Core 2 Duo as described and it is marked "X-GSP."

the Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q9650/3.00GHz, 12M, 1333FSB X-GSP is marked the same...SO i'm making the

leap of faith that it will work. when the chip gets here, i'll post the results.

Have you gotten any updated info to this? Reading the GSP it seems they are trying to keep things simple for their business customers... does not mean something will or will not work on the computer. Basically the 780 in NY will be identical to the one in Moscow... so a company IT dept does not have surprises.

There is no updated info.  Dell does not support changing the processor.

Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9650 is not a QX9650.  QX9650's DO not work due to drawing too much power.

Chris M may have a validated processor list for the optiplex 780.

Fairly sure that the board will not post without the front panel control board and cable because the thermal sensor is on that board.

I believe that the Performance Copper Heatsink is the same for Dimension E520 E521 Optiplex GX620 755 745, 380, 755, 760, 780 MT.

The cheap Aluminum version is HR004, J7109, FW209, W5685, W6177

HEATSINK D9729     SHROUD J9761 is the High end Copper part.

Is the copper heat sink an option on Dell quad core Optiplex 780s?
