Hi kaliwiggins,

Please tell me the model of your Dell desktop and operating system. It's possible your problem is a dead motherboard battery, so I hope you kept the old hard drive.

What I want you to do is boot to the BIOS and check the system time. If it's correct, then it's not the motherboard battery. The next thing to check in the list of drives in the BIOS. Your hard drive should be SATA port 0. If that port displays no drive, then your drive's data or power cable might be loose. You'll need to open the system to check.

Let me know what you find. There are a couple other things you can try.

I want you to run the diagnostics using your Dell drivers and utilities disc. To test your hard drive using your Dell Drivers and Utilities disc:

1. Reboot your system. When you see the Dell logo, hit F12 to enter the boot menu.
2. Insert the Dell Drivers and Utilities disc in your CD/DVD drive.
3. Pick the option to boot from the CD/DVD drive.
4. You will be prompted to hit any key to continue booting from the CD/DVD drive.
5. You will be prompted to hit 1 to run the Dell diagnostics. You may see two such menus.
6. Select Test System.
7. Select Custom Test.
7. Use the arrow keys or mouse to select your hard drive.
9. Click Run Tests.
10. Write down any error messages.

Yes, please go here and download the diagnostics for your system. Follow the instructions to prepare a bootable CD or flash drive from which you can run the diagnostics according to my instructions above.

Keep in mind that the diagnostics gets its hardware info from the BIOS. Unless your hard drive appears in the BIOS, the diagnostics won't work.

I had the same message on my Dell XPS 8300 running Windows 7, but when I insert the Dell Drivers and Utlities disc, the computer does not recognize when I press 1, only when I press Q to cancel. I can't past this point with the disc.

Osprey4,

I am getting a error code OF00:1344 which states Msg:DISK-Block 348969367:Can't read , replace disk or remove write Protection".  What should I do.

That sounds like a bad block on the hard drive.

Error code '0F00:1344 disk can't be read', indicates the hard drive has failed and you replace it.
