Reg: Upgrading my graphics card to NVIDIA geforce GTX 760/780
Hi,
I am working with a Dell Precision work station 690 which currently uses a NVIDIA QUADRO FX 3450.. I want to upgrade this to a high end graphics card mostly NVIDIA Geforce GTX 760/780.. However , when I read the Specs for Dell Precision work station 690, it is mentioned that is support memory only till 512.. Are high end graphics card compatible with my PC? Will there be any power issues? I have an extra 6 pin cord from PSU on my PC.

Hi Rama9,
You can try upgrading to the Nvidia Geforce GTX 780 graphic card as the specification matches mostly.
The power supply which is 750W which supports the graphic card and as the computer has the PCI E 2.3 which will adjust with the graphic card’s speed

yes i stuffed a gtx 760 with 4 gb ddr5 into my 690 with out a problem there was even the correct power adapters ready to go.. x2 i do have the 1 kv powersupply. booted on first try. this box with that card MOVES
specs are 36 gb ram two xeons both quad core that 2.33 x 8 cpu's it boots in about 20 seconds detail on games is amazing and no i could but i would run another gtx 760 in sli not worth the price for the small gain

I purhcased a GTX750TI for my 690 with the 750 power supply, and nothing, will not work at all :/
any ideas?

Check if your chosen video card requires UEFI.
The GeForce GTX 960 failed in my Precision 690.
Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit would not boot with this card.
I believe the issue is that this card requires a motherboard with UEFI which the 690 does not have.
Other posts report that the GeForce 750 Ti fails also because of lack of UEFI.
I found this site on Dell which says that the Radeon R9 280X will work in a 690:
Note in the above URL the requirement for a 1000W power supply. Some video cards require two (2) 6-pin or one (1) 6-pin and one (1) 8-pin connector from the power supply.

Could you tell me the manufacturer and part number of the GTX 760 card you installed? Your motherboard version and BIOS level too would help.
I just tried installing an EVGA Nvidia Geforce GTX 750 P/N 01G-P4-2751-KR without any success.
My machine is a Precision 690 with BIOS level A07, motherboard 0MY171, Xeon E5335 processor, Nvidia Quadro FX 4600 video card... just tried pulling the Quadro FX 4600 and installing a new EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 card to try improving 3D graphic and video playback performance.
As power-on proceeds, after a time I get solid green 1-2-3 diagnostic lights followed by 2 beeps. The fan on the GTX 750 is spinning. The diagnostic light code from the Dell P690 Quick Reference Guide, page 41, says "Routine system activity preceding video initialization" and "Watch your monitor for on-screen messages" while the 2-beep beep code is undocumented. There is no activity on the display and the display's power button stays amber (doe not turn green).
EVGA tells me the card requires UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) in the motherboard's BIOS, but I believe this is just a blow-off answer as I have installed this card in a Dell Precision T7500 and an older HP Pavilion p6240f, neither of which have UEFI; the GTX 750 from EVGA works just great in both.
