Greetings - I'd like to put a fancier video card in my Dimension 3100/E310, and I know it only has a 230W power supply. Question: given current standards, can I buy a bigger power supply from someplace like TigerDirect, and install it? I'd like to put the PCI-E 1X Radeon HD 4350 card in the system. Also, I'd like to run two internal SATA drives. I'm worried that this will surpass, or come close to the 230W limit. What can I do?
Check out the supplies from PC Power at http://www.pcpower.com/products/power_supplies/dell/. The one I'm looking at is the 500W unit for all (3) of my E310's. About $80, but a 3-4 week delivery. You can also get it from Provantage (http://www.provantage.com/pc-power-cooling-ppcs500d~7PCPW007.htm)
Dell is using standard, but under powered supplies, but uses a different pin out on the connectors and MOBOs. Plugging in a commodity PSU into the Dell MOBO, or a Dell PSU into a commodity MOBO will permanently damage your MOBO.
The 3100/e310 PC's have an open back panel, you are use a standard generic stock ATX power supply, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin motherboard main connector, with or without the on/off switch and two SATA power connectors.
The power supplies can be purchased from most local, or online computer stores.
The instructions for replacing the power supply are HERE.<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
I, too am very much interested in the Radeon 4350 and would like to know if anyone has used it in a Dim 3100. There are some flavors that even advertise that they would operate with a 250w ps. Has anyone actually tried putting one in? They have them in regular pci, pci x1, and x16.
