SX280 - Maxmium confirmed working CPU upgrade
I just recently acquired a used SX280 from an off-lease reseller - so recently, in fact, that I haven't received it yet! Of course, I'm already looking into potential hardware upgrades.
A preliminary search on both these forums and the rest of the Internet indicates that these are compatible with the x64 series of Intel Prescott 2M LGA 775 Pentium 4 CPUs, and they can use 2GB DDR2 desktop DIMMs, for a total of 4GB RAM (in a 64-bit OS). I saw that at least one owner was able to drop in a 3.4GHz 640 successfully. I also saw that, in October 2010, a Dell rep indicated that Dell had successfully tested at least one of Intel's 3.8 GHz P4 CPUs in this model - however, that posting did not specify which 3.8GHz CPU was compatible.
Before I go purchasing a processor upgrade for this machine, can someone please confirm whether or not Intel's x64 3.8GHz Pentium 4 is compatible? This would be either the HT 670 or 672. If it is confirmed (not just speculated or assumed, please) that this CPU is incompatible, I would be interested in knowing what is the fastest x64 drop-in replacement processor for this machine.
Thank you!

I do not see a 3.80GHz CPU on the SX280 validated parts page? Hopefully a customer will post saying what 3.80GHz CPU did work.

Do any of the Prescott 2M CPUs work? I've seen postings in this forum from people using certain models successfully. What about Cedar Mill?

I cannot say since we never tested them. Other users will have to attest to them.

I got the same little shoe box running on a P4 530 3.00ghz, and wanted to upgrade to the P4 670 3.80ghz which is pretty cheap by now, $20!, my question is since the 530 runs around 84watts and the 670 runs at 115watts, is there going to be any problems such frying the mobo,or the cpu itself? i know heat is a big issue since it doesnt have a cpu fan, just the copper heatsink and the front and rear fans. Would i be better of with the P4 650 that runs at 3.40ghz and have the same wattage as the p4 530, the 650 its pretty darn cheap @ $10?
