Serious XPS400 Problem

Jump to solution

Sorry Ron,

I quess I wasn't very clear as to what I did. After installing new hard drive I used the Windows XP Pro disc and formatted the hard drive with an NTFS Partition. XP Pro w/SP2 Installed fine and came up when rebooted. At this point is when I had no sound, monitor probs and all the yellow (?) marks on the devices under "Other Devices" I described. This is when I went on and installed SP3 through Automatic Updates. Still the problems existed. I thought the OS being made for a Dell would have recognized the "Other Devices" on my computer as I only have what came with it brand new, connected to it.

My XPS400 does not have a sound card/modem card. The only card is the monitor card, all else is integrated on the motherboard.

Here are the ID#'s for the main components:

MotherBoard           -  CN-0YC523-70821-5A9-H0FJ

Monitor Card           -  CN-0UC996-69861-5A2-00EE

Monitor (E196FPf)  -  CN-0GC811-72872-580-02FS

Speakers                -  CN-0F6371-48220-5A3-094A

Here are the "Other Devices" with yellow (?) marks:

>AUDIO DEVICE ON HIGH DEFINITION AUDIO BUS

>PCI SIMPLE COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER

>VIDEO CONTROLLER

>VIDEO CONTROLLER(VGA COMPATABLE)

Sorry I reposted this but couldn't figure out how to answer your post...hit post under your post and it kept kicking me back to top of page.

You were perfectly clear on what you did. Did you actually install the driver and are all the ? gone from Device Manager now?

Keep in mind that  the Dell Windows XP Reinstallation CD only installs XP, regardless of what Service Pack is on the disk. It does not install any of the hardware drivers. That means you have to install the drivers yourself, one at a time, in the right order, after loading XP. And you probably should have installed all the drivers after loading XP SP2, before you updated to SP3.

So lets go through this again. If you haven't already installed them, the correct order to install the drivers is:

  1. Desktop System Software
  2. Chipset
  3. Video driver
  4. Audio driver
  5. Network driver
  6. Other drivers

Unless and until you install those drivers in order, your hardware won't work correctly. Reboot in Safe Mode (reboot and press F8) to load #1 and then #2. When those are done, reboot normally and install the rest of the drivers. I can't tell from the numbers you posted which video card you have so you'll need to know what it is, to find the right video driver.

As for the Utility partition, that was on the old hard drive. Since you replaced the drive, you don't have that partition any more, but you should be able to run the diagnostics from your Dell Resources CD.

Sujatha K,

I performed all the steps in the list and it seems most is working again,

However, I still cannot get on the online dell diagnostics. It comes and

says the diag was loaded but did not run, start diag on computer manually

and try again. I do this and get a message "No diagnostic utility partition

found".

What now?

HELP!
