Standby Problem - Fans Keep Running??

I recently reinstalled Windows XP.

Now when I go into standby mode, my fans (cpu, power supply, video card) keep running.

(They always shut off in standby mode before I did the reinstall).

How do I get the fans to turn off in standby mode?
Is there a setting in windows somewhere?

Thanks for any help.

Dimension 4550, Windows XP.

Allan,

Are you sure you aren't talking about hibernate mode instead of standby?

No, I am talking about standby.

I press start, turn off computer, standby.

System goes into standby mode, but the fans keep running.

(Fans always turned off in standby mode BEFORE I formatted and REINSTALLED windows xp)

Now the fans keep running in standby.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hibernate mode saves everything into memory and turns off computer.

Standby mode reduces the amount of power used by shutting off hard drive and monitor.  Fans should still be running b/c comuter is running b/c the system is still on.  If fans and everything were off, you wouldn't be able to wake up the computer by hitting the space bar or moving the mouse.

I've seen this problem reported before, although I've been running standby on a system with a reinstalled WinXP with no problem.

I'd suggest checking the BIOS settings. Most BIOSes have settings that determine the standby mode used. I remember that one mode runs the fans while the other one doesn't.
(I use standby on a Dimension 4300S and Optiplex GX60, and have verified operation on a Dimension 8200.)

Allan,

This may or may not apply, but just in case:

If you have a USB keyboard and mouse, it may be the problem.

If those devices are checked in device manager to "allow this device to bring computer out of standby", USB requiring full power, it could cause the system to have power to the fans as well. Have a read:

For what it's worth, my Optiplex has a USB mouse and *no* keyboard and is brought out of standby by pressing a mouse button. Its fans don't run in standby. Note that moving the mouse doesn't bring it out of standby and the LED is off. Just the buttons work.

This is fascinating stuff.

I just set my (non-Dell) P4 to go into standby today just to see what happened.

I have both PS/2 mouse and keyboard, and enabled them both in device manager (WIN2K).

Blinking LED indicators on monitor and tower, but fans still running in the back.

I normally only allow my monitor to sleep after 10-15 minutes.

I'll continue to follow this thread for a sure-fire conclusion.
