Studio XPS 8100 Power Supply - Okay to run GeForce GTX260 ?
Hi there,
I just ordered what looks like a great system but have one question:
Will the power supply give me any problems running the GTX260 card? I've read that the card should run 500W minimum power - the 8100 only has 350W. Will this be an issue? I was not given an option to upgrade the power supply.
Any insight would be appreciated!
Thanks, Buskerdu

Dell underclocks the 260 to make it work.

Hmmmm. Tx for the info pollock.
Is that something I should worry about - will it impact performance significantly? Since I paid extra for the 260 over the 240 or the Radeon 5770 I hope it wasn't a waste of money if the card can't be run properly.
Any advice?

Replace the power supply with a 550-600 watt model and turn the GTX260 up.

The Ultra Gold series 550W fits just fine.

Thanks for the info. For that price you can't go wrong. The only question is will it fit in the 8100 case properly? I had a hard time finding a proper fitting PSU for my last Dell and I understand the 8100 is a very tight case as it is?
Overall based on my build am I better off sticking with the 8100 and upgrading the PSU or moving to the 9000 - which I believe comes with a 475W PSU; not great anyway. The only other benefits would be a move to Tri-Channel memory and the i7-920 versus 860.
Thanks again for any feedback...

I have an 8000 and it fits perfectly. They are the same case.

I have the XPS 8100 that I am upgrading and not sure if I need to get a bigger power supply. I am adding:
Do I need to upgrade my 350 W power supply? Someone told me manufacturers skimp and ship with only enough power for included devices.
I never replaced a supply but my assumption is the unit comes with everything I need so I just screw in and plug in, right?
The previous comments recommended SeaSonic S12II 520 Bronze 520W and Ultra LSP550 - the latter much cheaper so any reason to not get that? (I do want a quieter fan but not sure about the difference between the two.
I appreciate any feedback you may have!
