T3500 Memory Integrity Test fail after CPU upgrade

Hi,

I recent got a used T3500 workstation - it has 12GB RAM (6 x 2gb) and a W3503 Xeon. The latest bios A17 was already installed. I upgraded to windows 10 pro and all appeared to be working well.

I bought a x5677 cpu and installed as an upgrade - the system already had the U016F heatsink, which I cleaned and applied new thermal paste to. On the first boot everything seemed OK - cpu recognised in bios and windows. But then windows crashed and on reboot I got 2000-0123 on the diagnostics and a memory integrity fail. All other tests passed.

The problem was reported for DIMM 6, but on later reboots it happened with DIMM 5. I reseated all sticks, cleaning slots with an air duster. The systems seems stable with 3 x 2gb, but is always having issues with all slots used. I have swapped sticks around several times, so it seems not to be a problem with the individual memory modules.

I noted the CMOS battery was reporting a low voltage, so have installed a new one.

After each crash I can usually get windows to boot again, and then it crashes after a few minutes.

Could there be an issue between the x5677 and the RAM, or is it more likely that I have clumsily fried the motherboard/DIMM slot whilst changing the CPU? as far as I can see the T3500 should support the x5677.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ross

The issue is that the FSB of the old cpu is a lot slower than the new cpu.

You have DDR3 10,600 1.5v  and need Low density TRI channel  DDR3  12,800  1.35v

No Idea what a 5677 is as it doesnt exist.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. The x5677 very much exists ark.intel.com/.../Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5677-12M-Cache-3_46-GHz-6_40-GTs-Intel-QPI

It supports 800 1066 and 1333 ddr3. The hynix memory I have is 1066 1.5 v. The cpu vid is 1.35 v max, nut not sure this means that 1.35 v memory is required?

The north bridge memory controller is part of the cpu vs the old way where it was a separate memory controller. The memory controller hub which handles communication between the CPU and RAM, was moved onto the processor die.

Hi thanks again.

The x5677 is recognised and windows can boot - just not stable. Would the suggested difference in architecture not prevent the cpu registering and the system booting?

As far as I can see both CPUs have integrated memory controllers. the older lower spec is a Bloomfield Xeon where the newer X5677 is a Westmere. The main difference between them is that the W35XX is a 45 nm die and the westmere is a 32 nm which provided opportunity for more than 4 cores. As far as I can see the microarchitecture is otherwise the same.

Ultimately the difference in die size may be the problem. But I don't believe it is due to suggestion that it is the memory controller being integrated or not.

There are T3500 that are being sold with x5677 cpus, at least in the current used market. I know there may have been motherboard revisions, but all documentation suggests the T3500, in general, work with the 5600 series, which is 'westmere' and 32 nm, as is the specific cpu I have.

A local (non Dell) technician verified that all RAM is OK, and I have reinstalled the old processor and all is working fine - seems to suggest there isn't a fault with the memory or motherboard.

I have another 5677 coming, so if the result is the same, I can conclude it is not going to work in this board or that the seller has a faulty batch!
