T3500 extra cpu fan and connector pin out
Hi, I just upgraded the cpu of my T3500 to W3680. The core temperatures climb up to mid 80s during full load, which makes the computer very noisy. Havn't really see any unstability but causes my concern.
My question is: is it possible to install one extra cpu fan on the heatsink? I see there is a 4-pin connector besides the memory slots. looks like a fan connector but not sure. Also, it seems have a special connector. What is the typical pin out?
Thanks!

Hi quiangbo,
It's not possible to install extra fans. The most likely problem is that you did not apply thermal paste properly. My suggestion would be to remove the new CPU and try it again.

Thanks!
I tried to follow the general guidlines for how to apply thermal paste.
I am using the heatsink T021F, which is aluminum. But there is another part available: U016F, which seem coper based. Would the latter one make a big difference?
Thanks.

Hi there,
Just seen your thread and thought I'd give my take on things, I hope osprey4 doesn't mind!
U016F is the performance heatsink for the Precision T3500 and was shipped whenever a customer had a processor that had a high TDP (Thermal Design Power) requirement. According to the information that I have, this server was designed to use Nehalem series processors that had a TDP range of between 38W TDP to 130W TDP. While your processor isn't a Nehalem series processor, it appears to have a TDP requirement of 130W TDP (from here: http://ark.intel.com/products/47917/Intel-Xeon-Processor-W3680-(12M-Cache-3_33-GHz-6_40-GTs-Intel-QPI) )- this would require the performance heatsink to help keep the processor within thermal limits.

Hi,
I referred the service manual for Dell T3500, and it says there are 3 types of fan connectors under System board connectors: section
1. Processor Fan - One 4-pin connector
2. Chassis fan - One 3-pin connector
3. HDD cage fan - One 3-pin connector
What i don't understand is, there is not a single 4 or 3 pin socket in which such a fan cable would go in. All are 5 pin sockets on system board.
Am i missing something?
Regards,
Nirav
