U3011 Moves And Resizes Windows After Log Off Or Lock

I have a U3011 that seems to be working perfectly--no buzzing, stripes, rattling, full resolution available, no DisplayPort lockups, etc.

So all is good, except... this weird thing.

I place my browser window, email windows, etc. where I want them. Then I log off (or the system times me out due to inactivity). When I log back in (or unlock the screensaver), the windows have been resized and moved.

I said it was weird.

It's completely reproducible. The system has never done this before. It started the day I hooked up the U3011.

This doesn't sound like a monitor fault. It sounds more like an operating system video card configuration issue. Moving this thread.

It only does this when I turn off the monitor. If I leave the monitor on and just let the screensaver lock the PC, I can log back in and the windows are in the correct locations. Does that still sound like a video card problem? Seems like a monitor problem if turning off the monitor causes the problem.

I have the same problem.  The windows typically get resized to nearly square in shape, and roughly 1/8th the size of the screen.  Very annoying, and I tried updating my video card drivers (GTX580-based) to no avail.

Misery loves company. I'm using an NVIDIA GeForce GT 430. What card are you using?

I should mention that we have two U3011s, connected on two different PCs to the same kind of card, and both exhibit this behavior.

Can we get a response from Dell about this problem?

I use an MSI N580GTX Lightning Xtreme.  My problem isn't as consistent/repeatable as yours, it happens maybe 30% of the time for me.

jimshowalter,

Have you tried using a DVD-D cable instead of Displayport?  I would like to try it but can't find the cable that came with the U3011.

oops typo, the above should have read DVI-D (i.e, dual link DVI)

I'll dig up a cable from storage and give it a try.

jimshowalter,

Any luck using DVI-D?  Or did you find some other fix?

This turns out to be inherent in the DisplayPort spec. See www.monitortests.com/.../Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU for details.
