Re: UPS for Dell XPS 8500

Hi BobLouder,

The power supply on the XPS 8500 system is an Active PFC power supply.

It does not require a pure sine wave UPS. You may use one of the non-sine wave UPS. They should work with the system as it needs 460 Watts of power while the UPS on the links that you have shared are capable of 600 and 900 Watts respectively.

Let me know if you need more information or assistance. I will be glad to help.

Thanks and regards,

I for one wish that you, dell and other Dell tec support staff would get their act together...In a pervious post on this forum it was stated by a different dell  represenative that indeed the xps8500 required a ups that had true signwave output.... Your above statement is in direct contradiction to the previous one ....  Who or what are we to believe???? please once again verify the true fact s in reguards to the required type of output from ups  necessary for the xps 8500..  once again Does the xps 8500  require a ups with stepped or pure signwave output . tec support lately leaves alot to be desired.. this basic information should be contained within the basic  Q&A product specifications and requirements..

Re: UPS for Dell XPS 8500

Hi Mac II,

The PFC power supply of XPS 8500 system works over a wide range of frequency (50-60 Hz). Moreover, due to its very wide input voltage range, it can automatically adjust to operate on AC power from about 100 V to 230 V. It does not essentially require a Pure Sine Wave UPS.

Although a pure sine wave UPS provides a better (purer) current output and would be a better option, your system should work fine with an regular UPS as well. A Pure Sine Wave UPS is recommended for very sensitive electronic and scientific equipment. For more information on Active PFC Power Supplies, refer to the link below:

I believe that this information should and must be encluded in the xps8500 printed instruction/operation/specifications/requirements manual thus avoiding any chance of warranty denial by dell in the future. for obivious reasons Your article concerning PFC power was very informative . However due to the m any conflictin answers  already  given by dell tecs/support staff I am left with a certain degree of uncertainity concerning this requirement..my thoughts are if it isn't a published (contained within the actual product documentation/specifications/requirements of the xps8500) this critical  requirement can be manipulated in the future for the sole purpose of warranty claim denail should in fact a problem occur as a direct result of employing the use of said product. Especially in the case of power outages, power surges/ voltage spikes etc   too subjective without written verification...

Re: UPS for Dell XPS 8500

Thank you for replying. I appreciate your feedback.

The documentation of XPS 8500 does not explicitly state that it required a Pure-Sine Wave UPS. Therefore, it should work with a regular UPS. However, you may use a Pure Sine Wave UPS as it definitely provides a purer electric output.

Let me know if you need any information. I will be glad to assist.

Thanks and regards,

Re: UPS for Dell XPS 8500

I suggest a GE UPS. They make both Tower and Rack mount UPSs.  The IT Series might be best for your XPS system.  See more at GE's web site  www.gedigitalenergy.com/.../itseries.htm
