USB Headset on XPS 8900
I have a brand new, just out of the box XPS 8900. The odd thing is, the headset microphone only works when the Sound options window is open. Close that window, and the headset/mic stops working. If it's open it works perfectly. Since I use the headset/mic for work, I'd love to know what's causing this. It's strange, to say the least,
EDIT: This machine is running Windows 7 (yes I know, it came that way).

To be honest, Robert - I haven't done a thing. I got very lucky just finding out that the headset works when the window is open. Without this for work I'm sunk. Since the workaround actually works (leaving the window open) I'm actually hesitant to change anything and just put up with the options window hidden behind the work windows.

Hi Caseyst,
Thanks for posting.
Sounds like the original operating system image extraction was faulty. Did you try installing the retail Realtek driver?

Sorry - I should have said in the beginning this computer came with and is running Windows 7 now. I found it odd as well, since I ordered it with Windows 10.

Next post is intentionally Text only so you can make a REG file to import and fix rather than the steps below.
To correct the bug, follow these steps:
Click on the Start Menu Search, enter Regedit, and click on the matching search result to launch the app.
Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key and drill down through the directories to locate the correct registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform
Double-click the EnableFrameServerMode
DWORD entry and change the value to 0.
Click OK to save the setting.
Navigate to the following location to perform the same modification on a similar entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform

nd change the value to 0.

No with windows 7 you go into control panel and change the inputs to the USB headset instead of the onboard Audio.
