Upgrade Dimension 5150 to SSD HD
Dell Dimension 5150.
2.8 GHz, 3GB of RAM.
2 (current) SATA HDs 500GB and 1TB.
Running Win8.1 (yes, it seems to work OK, but I want a performance boost).
1 ATI Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series Graphics Card (as from CPUID).
BIOS A05 (03/31/2006).
Hi,
I would like to install a new SSD HD (Samsung 250 GB 840 Evo) in my Dimension 5150 and would like to use a SATA 3.0 card like the one suggested in a thread from about a year ago (www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx). But, before I go ahead and buy one, I want to be sure that I can setup the computer to boot from the SSD card connected to the SATA 3 PCI-Express card. I want to clone the windows that I have on my old drive and run it from the SSD.
By the way, the card is a Marvell 88se9128 Sata3 3.0 Raid Card and says it supports booting (That just happens to be the one I can get here in Brazil). Will I need to upgrade the BIOS if I go with the card? I have the original BIOS that came with the computer when I bought it in July 2006.
Also, I only have 2 outputs on the energy line for the HDs and I already have 2 HDs. I am willing to sacrifice one of them to put in the SSD HD if necessary, but is there a way of getting an extra output for the energy line (like buying an extension) and will the power supply support 3 HDs if this is an option?
Thanks ever-so-much for any advice you can give me,
