Upgrade of Dimension 5150 - P4 to D930 (0WG261)
I am trying to upgrade my 5150 CPU to a Pentium D930 and so far have had no luck - my motherboard is a 0WG261
I have seen online several times that its possible to use the D9xxx series of chipsets with my motherboard (DELL DM051) but all I get when I start my pc is the power light remains permanently orange.
The PSU of the pc is a 580W one so I dont believe that it is a power issue.
I am also running BIOS update A07 and it still isnt working. I have heard that A06 may have been a working solution but of course, you cant get your hands on this, How true that is as well is anybody's guess.
so, I am now asking the Dell community to provide me with as much info and advice on my issue and hopefully help me resolve my problem. I hope that you can - thank you

leehumphreys2000,
I know that our XJ848 Presler P4 930 (3.0Ghz, 2X2MB, 800FSB, C1) was validated. Is your D930 ours or a retail CPU?

Hi Chris, it's a retail Intel Pentium D 930

I meant to also mention that if I put my P4 back in, the system starts up with no problems at all, so the steady amber light in this case isnt because the motherboard is fried.

I'm still hoping that somebody in the community may have a solution for me (other than 'spend more money)
I've seen plenty of different threads that mention people have this kind of setup working, but with an F1 prompt on startup - to be honest with you I'd be happy with that. Is it possible to get a copy of the A06 BIOS?

I have an E510 and upgraded the CPU from the original D805 to a D925. My BIOS is the latest on the Dell downloads (I had to upgrade to this BIOS for Vista). VT is not an issue for me as I have a system with a Q6600 CPU that does have that.
We have documented cases on the old Dell users forum of users upgrading the CPU's and the D945 seems to be the maximum, even though Intel says a D960 is compatible. There were several different motherboards used in the 5150/E510's over the production cycle. I have a 0HJ054 motherboard (the last one used) and this seems to be the most "compatible". The CPU's should work in other models but the other model motherboards will give an "Incompatible CPU" error and press F1 to continue on bootup, where that is not the case with the 0HJ054 motherboard. If you don't want the "press F1" hassle at boot up try to find a 0HJ054 motherboard.

I have the same motherboard on my 5150 and tried a D940. I also get the solid Amber Light problem.
There is a thread with 62 replies of people posting their 5150 / E510 config. At least 4-5 are running Pentium D processors. Some with Intel VT (9x0), others not. No one confirmed they could ENABLE Intel VT.
My last hope is also to try the A06 bios, which I doubt from all the posts will fix the issue. Anyone want to offer up the E510 A06 bios for private exchange ?
My main goal was to get Intel VT working, but I'm going to give up on this old machine now and make it an extra PC instead of server... too bad.

I have Mainboard: Dell 0RD203 in mz Dimension 5150 and neither BIOS A05 or A07 allow this machine to post with a D940 CPU. Just the solid amber light, very quiet, even crickets chirping.
So, I guess it's change the motherboard to 0HJ054 or keep it as a spare PC... I was really hoping for a Hyper-V server - but need Intel VT enabled.
Thanks all.
