I need to upgrade my GPU in my Inspiron 580. To do so I need a new PSU as well, I have been hearing that Dell systems can not be upgraded with other branded parts, but dell do not offer the power / Graphics I require. Is there any restrictions with this?

As long as you have a TOWER and not a SLIM Desktop a Standard power supply like corsair TX650 will work fine or in this case Antec True Power 650W.  Video cards LONGER than 8 inches however may be an issue.

That might be true for some models, but not the Inspiron 580.
