Upgrading XPS 8500 i5 to an i7 3770

Hello everyone

I have a

XPS 8500 I5

460w

8gb memory

EVGA Geforce GTX 960.

Win 7 64bit

The system runs great. I read the forums and saw the motherboard can handle an i7 3770. I picked up this processor and installed it yesterday.

The pc was able to see see it and I though all was well until I went to play a game. The game could barely start and the processor was getting loud. I checked my GPU temp and it was at 35 which tells me the processor was trying to handle the graphics and not the graphics card.

Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this issue?

Thanks again.

did you clean the CPU and CPU cooler and apply new thermal paste?

have you checked to ensure that the CPU cooling fan is spinning?

Yes to both, it's a new Intel chip with cooler which had thermal paste on it.

Before I closed the case I made sure the fan was spinning.

I questioned the quality of the thermal paste so I ordered Artic MX-4 paste.

Do I need to make any changes to the bios? They are up to date, just want to make sure all setting are correct.

Thank you
